Tenacious_Peaches Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side... Musical Youth I know that dutchie is not really supposed to be a euphamism for pot, but it sounds like it, doesn't it?
dA_mAnDa Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Come on Eileen is awesome haha. Lets see...ummm. "Sex and Candy" was good.
Denmark Street Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side... Musical Youth I know that dutchie is not really supposed to be a euphamism for pot, but it sounds like it, doesn't it? yes..and no. The song was a cover version of an older reggae tune called ' Pass the Cutchie'. Now, 'cutchie' is 70s Jamaican slang for a spliff, but seeing as how Musical Youth were just kids, their manager didn't think it was a smart idea for them to sing about that kind of thing iif they were going to be succesful, so..the word got changed to 'dutchie', which is a type of big Jamaican cooking pot. Problem solved instantly, no posible offence could be given,.. and a big hit was the result!
MuzikTyme Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 A few one-hit-wonders to me are: Counting Blue Cars - Dishwalla And Fools Cry On - Brother Cane Honest to God - Brad Gillis I'm a Believer - Giant Tainted Angel - Southgang Hole Hearted - Extreme Burning Heart - Vandenberg Spirit in the Night - Krokus Perfectly Good Guitar - John Hiatt She's a Girl and I'm a Man - LLoyd Cole Take 5 - Northside Some obvious choices would include: Signs- Five Man Electrical Band Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris Lunatic Fringe - Red Ryder Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum Go All the Way - Raspberries Magic - Pilot Drivers Seat - Sniff and the Tears The Rapper - The Jaggerz Wildflower - Skylark Many, many more. Not talking about the bands whose musicians changed groups or soloed but what in the world prompted the talent of these one hit gems and wonder how long the money lasted some of these one hit wonders...if they didn't sign away the rights?
Brian Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Step by step, heart to heart, left right left, we all fall down like TOY SOLDIERS. Anyone remember that one hit wonder by Martika?
Opiate Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 LOL!!! Martika! From KIDS INCORPORATED!!! How funny is that! And yes I am guilty...I loved that song back in the day!...before I knew what "real" music was.
Brian Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Oh yeah... another one I am guilty of is "Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly)" by the Icicle Works. Ouch, did I just admit that on a public forum?
_Jayson_ Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 How about the Macarena for a one hit wonder? Im guilty of learning those stupid dance moves to it. What was I thinking.
spawnfreak Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Sorry! How could I possibly leave out: Kajagoogoo - Too Shy You're too shy, shy, hush hush!! And Flock of Seagulls - I Ran ...and I ran, I ran so far away. I couldn't get away!
Carl Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 "Mouth" by Merril Bainbridge. I thought she was going to be a star.
GeeterMcgee Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 How about these for current plays on local Classic Rock stations accros this nation: "All Right Now", by FREE. "Classical Gas", by Anson Williams Don't remember title- Mountain Don't remember title- Aldo Nova
katie_sane Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 what about former eurovision song contest winners Buck's Fizz with "the land of make believe" ::
Denmark Street Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 :: Count yourself as very, very lucky..Bucks Fizz had several hits in the UK, and each one was just as bad as 'The Land of Make- believe'!
Tenacious_Peaches Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 My Name is Norman Bates by Landscape My name is Norman Bates; I?m just a normal guy. My name is Norman Bates-s-s-s-s. My name is Norman Bates; I?m just a normal guy. My name is Norman Bates-s-s-s-s. Mother! Oh my God! [spoken over refrain.] Did Norman murder the girl in the Bates Motel? Yes, or No? To understand the case, you have to go back to the time ten years ago, When the young Norman murdered his mother and her lover. Matricide: perhaps, the most unbearable crime of all. Norman refused to come to terms with the horror of his deed. His mother was still alive. He stole her corpse and preserved it with chemicals. He kept her alive by wearing her clothes; speaking in her voice; thinking her thoughts. He became both mother and son. Norman Bates; normal, healthy young man with regular interests and habits. And Mrs. Bates; a clinging, posessive woman, and a homicidal maniac. When Norman encountered the girl at the motel, his sexual instincts were aroused. He wanted her ? desired her. This was too much for the other side of Norman?s personality. In a jealous frenzy, Mother murdered the girl. When two personalities share the same mind, there is always conflict. Now, that conflict is over: Mother has taken over Norman?s mind. Perhaps for all time. Norman Bates no longer exists.
MellonCollie Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 I wish I was in Tijuana Eating barbecued iguana... Mexican Radio Wall of Voodoo I'd have to agree, great song. :guitar:
cindy17838 Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 "Hot Summmer Night in Sausalito" by Diesel "Connected" by Stereo MC's "Ready to Go" by Republica "Battle Flag" by the Low Fidelity All Stars "In the Meantime" by Spacehog "Flood" by Jars of Clay
MuzikTyme Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 "Hot Summmer Night in Sausalito" by Diesel Nice list Cindy. I had forgotten all about Diesel's song. It was good and what the heck happened to them? I thought that Space Hog was the next David Bowie and was prepared to watch them really take off.
cindy17838 Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 Musik, I don't know what happened to Deisel. Space Hog only had the one song that I liked. If you hadn't listed "Counting Blue Cars" I would have. It's like with Don McClean, "Day the music died" is one of my favorite songs. I can't even listen to some of his other stuff, Vincent for example. Did inspiration only strike once? What about a group called David and David? I have one of their CD's and almost every song is good, then nothing new. And the Lloyd Cole you mentioned, my favorite by him is "Downtown", what was the problem? Was he popular in England but not in America, like Cliff Richard? In his case it would have to be airplay that got him in the one hit wonder category, because he has a lot of good songs.
MuzikTyme Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 Indeed he does. I have the Don't Get Weird On Me Babe CD and it's excellent. Besides the very catchy She's a Girl and I'm a Man there's other very catchy songs, especially Tell Your Sister. I'm amazed that so much talent seemingly goes unnoticed by the vast masses. There's a lot of great new music but sadly not in the main stream as it once was, like in the 70's. Good music is where one finds it, much like the fisherman that never gives up. I'm fortunate to have a few local radio stations that aren't afraid of playing what has not yet been heard or approved. I'll never understand what provokes a great song being the only one on a CD. It's almost like it's an entirely different band. I guess it may be true for some to only hit the groove once. I heard a new song yesterday and it sounded exactly like Dishwalla. It was excellent but sadly the DJ didn't say who the artist was. Hopefully it was. As much as I like the band Chevelle I can't help but notice a striking similarity to Dishwalla. I'm sure you'll agree that The Lightning Seed's Life of Riley was a one-hit-wonder but by no means the only great song they did. I wonder how in the world I didn't hear them on the regular radio stations and why they didn't become a household word given the exceptional talent displayed on the CD Sense.
