A couple of famous classic covers:

This one's often mentioned, but seldom heard side by side. Everyone has their preference (ok, EVERYONE like's Manfred Mann's best)...but here's a chance to compare that whole deuce/douche thing.

Blinded By The Light ~ Da Boss

Manfred Mann ~ The douche version :P

Knockin' On Heavens Door ~ Guns 'N' Roses... a great cover, no doubt about it.

Dylan's Original ~ Twenty years earlier... An entirely different song. I still like this one best.

Springsteen's version is so much better than Manfred Mann's overblown cover. I have a hard time choosing between the GNR and the Dylan, just because they're both great in different ways, but I'd probably give the edge to Dylan for writing the genius song.

The Australian band Cold Chisel do a really good live version of Knockin' on Heaven's Door, better than the G 'n R one I think. But nothing beats the original. Such a haunting song.

Anyway, did I mention Smashing Pumpkin's version of Landslide? I love that.

Machine does a great Pink Floyd IMHO.

Machine

Just scroll down, hit full screen and the li'l arrow that points to the right . . . yeah, the play button.

Bar-none the best Pink Floyd cover.

BTW, this was in Frankfurt, Germany, 2005.

I heard about the Aussie Floyd a long time ago! I never checked them out though..

As for Blinded By The Light, I think i like Bruce's version better. I love that whole album, especially Lost in the Flood.

One cover that I like better than the original is, don't laugh at me  , Ugly Kid Joe's cover of Cat's in the Cradle.

edit:

I just saw the post about Hallelujah

I really love the John Cale version of that! I think that was the one.. Whichever one was on Scrubs.

16~To Love Somebody~Janis Joplin

I was deceived to hear Janis Joplin´s version... I thought she would have done something really amazing but no... the original is still the best.

Yes, chou, I know...

...but I expected more from Janis... I have been a fan of hers for a long time, even before she was dead... (yes, I´m old... .cool: )

 this cannot adequately express how loud and hard I laughed at the above statement.

Je vous adore, Edna!

I found this on My Old Kentucky Blog-scroll to half way down the page to find the MOKB cover project. I particularly liked Damien Rice's cover of When Doves Cry.

That Van Zandt guy's cover of Dead Flowers by the Stones, ya know, the one at the end of The Big Lebowski.

I like that cover better than the song. It really really really just sounds so beautiful, in the least gay way possible.

"It's A Long Way To The Top" ~ AC/DC

covered by Motorhead and quite well done too in my opinion. It was on an album dedicated to AC/DC for rockin the world like no one else can!

All songs are AC/DC covers, but this one is the one that sticks out for me. Of course, I'm a big fan of Motorhead as well!

I love Johnny Winter's version...as a matter of fact I love Johnny Winter's music. I've seen him play many times, but the one I remember most was in NYC and he played with Muddy Waters. It was probably 1980-81....Muddy died a year or so later. Everybody was in fine form that night.

Sidebar: I went to a bar after the show and had a few drinks (No this isn't one of Muddy's lyrics) and when I left the bar I accidently sliced two of my fingers on a piece of glass. The amount of blood was amazing. I spent most of the night in the Emergency Room of Lenox Hill Hospital. 9 stitches.
