Sweet Jane 61 Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 I was deceived to hear Janis Joplin´s version... I thought she would have done something really amazing but no... the original is still the best. Edna, I agree somewhat with your thoughts. Janis wasn't at her best with her version and as we all know I'm a true blue Janis fan. I'm not big on the BeeGees, but I do like that song, Janis just didn't seem to quite get it where it should be, and for her that was a surprise.
Sweet Jane 61 Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Bob Dylan ~ Blowing In The Wind Stevie Wonder ~ Blowing In The Wind I do favor the Stevie version. He gives the song the soul it needs.
Farin Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 I wouldn't be surprised when hardly anyone knows either versions, but: Daydream ~ Wallace Collection (1969) Daydream in Blue ~ I Monster (2001)
Uncle Joe Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymore-The original was by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons (not available on Youtube). The Cover-by The Walker Brothers
Rayzor Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 ^^ I agree fully with elie. Jeff Healey does an amazing cover of Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". I've always taken his covber for granted until he succumbed to his cancer.
Farin Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 it seems noone mentioned this one yet Hurt ~ Johnny Cash original: Hurt ~ Nine Inch Nails
bazooka Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 I stumbled upon this recently. Green River -- Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings I like it.
Viaene Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 I don't know the original one but 'Green River' sounds good! Have a look at Greenday's cover of Working class hero (original by John Lennon) perhaps I should nominate it one day.
bazooka Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 I don't know the original one but 'Green River' sounds good! Viaene, You're just 19 years old* (and from the Belgium bayous), so I suppose you can be forgiven not being aware of a classic by Creedence Clearwater Revival. You do know that Bill Wyman is a former Rolling Stone, n'est-ce pas ? [smaller]Actually, Wyman's version helped me decipher some of the lyrics.[/smaller] -------------- *Hey Nineteen
Lucky Posted April 6, 2008 Author Report Posted April 6, 2008 Wyman & co sound pretty fantastic on this. I like it a lot!
Viaene Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 my Belgian nationality has nothing to do with it! (I blame society & education) Creedence is on my list and now I know Bill Wyman is a Rolling Stone, just give me 5 more years credit
Epiphany Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 Yeah, Belgium is awesome, even though you don't have Belgian waffles! What's with that? All Along the Watchtower ~ Bob Dylan All Along the Watchtower ~ Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower ~ Viaene, singing in the shower.
Viaene Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Lol! I'll record my version for you (and we do have waffles )
Mike Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 It's no secret around here or anywhere that I'm a huge Beatles' fan. They covered a lot of songs in the early days. Twist and Shout is definitely better, IMHO, by the Beatles. And Dreams by Molly Hatchet, I think is better than the Allman Brothers version.
Viaene Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I think "Working class hero" sounds better by Greenday then by John Lennon. (don't shoot me, I still respect mr. Lennon!!!)
blind-fitter Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 And Marianne Faithful's "Working Class Hero" is better still than either of them. I prefer "Dear Prudence" by Siouxsie & The Banshees to the Beatles version.
skybluesky Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I like Iron & Wine's cover of "Such Great Heights" better than The Postal Service's original (Sorry Sue)
blind-fitter Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Now, I'm quite partial to Kraftwerk's original version of "The Model", ( I suppose, technically, the actual original was "Das Model"), but I'm also a fan of late 80s noiseniks BIG BLACK, and think their version is terrific. Surprised to find such an agreeable videoclip for it. "The Model" - Big Black

blind-fitter Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Indeed. You know Steve Albini, whose explanation of "how the industry works" article you posted recently? That's him on vocals and guitar.
Farin Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 really? cool I knew he was (is) a musician, but I didn't associate him with Big Black
blind-fitter Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Big Black is the band that made him famous.
