Yep, that's right, we go with the first appearance of the song, which is album in most cases. There are the few odd situations where a single was released prior to the album, or cases of there being a single and no album release at all (mostly oldies), but in general it's album release year.

Forgive the awful dated videos... Neil Sedaka is such a dork.

Yeah, that thing he did with his neck, during a duet with Toni Tannelle, was sort of distubing to watch.

You should have linked the duet (and original released) version with Elton John. That is a much nastier, rawer take on the song, that I really like.
