Shawna
I'm told that the One-Hit police have taken one of my nominations ("Build Me Up Buttercup") away in cuffs. So, here's another one to take its place... I never knew this was Carlos' brother. Suavecito ~ Malo

OLD 55
Well, I'm going to go for a couple of quite different 'songs' - more recitations, in fact, but both very interesting ones to me... Desiderata - Les Crane U.S. #8 1971. Now, this is not a religious song, rather more about accepting one's self. Those who know it would recognise my 'signature' as being from it. Les Crane was a U.S. DJ and TV presenter. He was married to Tina Louise (Ginger from 'Gilligan's Island') and did this after they broke up. The lyrics were adopted from a 1908 poem/piece of prose. Ringo - Lorne Greene U.S. #1 1964. Yes, Lorne Greene from TV's 'Bonanza' and 'Battlestar Galactica'. A song about a gunslinger named Johnny Ringo. Dappled
Ringo - Lorne Greene U.S. #1 1964. Yes, Lorne Greene from TV's 'Bonanza' and 'Battlestar Galactica'. A song about a gunslinger named Johnny Ringo. Great nomination, Darryl, though Lorne Greene isn't exactly singing. I knew the lyrics by heart back then... "He lay face down in the desert sand, holding a sixgun in his hand... " Still do... Edited November 19, 2007 by Guest
OLD 55
Thanks Lars. I was looking for something a bit different. It was very popular here in Australia too. Lorne Greene had a good 'narrating' voice. Please have a listen to the other one too if you haven't heard it before. Here's the lyrics...... You are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars, you have a right... Desiderata. Desiderata. Desiderata... Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, Be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others - Even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons - they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, For always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. You are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career - However humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is. Many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection, neither be cynical about love. For in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, It is as perenial as the grass. Take kindly the council of the years, Gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune, But do not distress yourself with imaginings - Many fears are borne of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, Keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. You are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. You are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here....(fade)

OLD 55
1. In The Year 2525 - Zager And Evans (The 'measuring stick' of all One Hit Wonders) 2. Spirit In The Sky - Norman Greenbaum 3. Venus - Shocking Blue 4. Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) - Edison Lighthouse (A Studio Group, but they assembled a 'real' one briefly, when this became a smash) 5. Loving You - Minnie Riperton 6. 99 Luftballons - Nena 7. Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas 8. Pop Muzik - M 9. Israelites - Desmond Dekker 10. Montego Bay - Bobby Bloom ................................................. Classical Gas - Mason Williams Mr. Bassman - Johnny Cymbal Wipe Out - The Surfaris (Reserves) Some I left out, because even though they may have had only 1 U.S. Hit, they were very popular elsewhere (e.g. T. Rex, The Proclaimers, Free). And even though they complied with the rules, there were some I couldn't class as O.H.W. - Buffalo Springfield, Iron Butterfly, etc. Do you know that Jimi Hendrix could have been nominated ? 'All Along The Watchtower' was his only U.S. Top 40 single.
