Steel2Velvet
Black Pearl - The Checkmates In 1968 I was a DJ on the USS Enterprise when this song came in on an Armed Forces Radio LP with several other hits. I played "Black Pearl for my audience, on that aircraft carrier, operating off the coast of Vietnam, almost everyday during my airshift. First song I recall hearing that paired the new "feminist movement" with the new "black is beautiful" awareness. The line "You'll never win a beauty show. No, they'll not pick you," was indicative of the prevailing sentiment back then. Of course now it is not uncommon at all for black women to win beatuy pageants.
