  1. the old thread seems to be AWOL, so here goes The Guns of Brixton ~ The Clash
  2. simple game: one person gives a song title that is a question, next one gives a song title that could be the answer to that question (should at least make some sense ) this one gives the next question song again, etc. example: q: Who are You? ~ The Who - a: I am the Walrus ~ The Beatles get it? okay, let's start with Who Wants to Live Forever? ~ Queen
  3. ^ I want to see that one too I watched Sergio Leone's "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" 8.5/10 one of the best Spaghetti-Western there is, with Clint Eastwood as the "Man with no Name" and Ennio Morricone's score
  4. Since we're not really big on writing reviews here, I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread like we already have for movies and books... So, tell us how you liked the last album you listened to Elastica ~ Elastica (1995) Even if some riffs are more or less 'borrowed', Ms Frischmann still knows how to write good music and a very good album... 9/10
  5. I think we used to have a thread for Jokes, but I couldn't find it anymore... so here's a new one The blonde's revenge: A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank; she has the title, and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $250,000 Rolls as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the blonde returns and repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely; but we are a little puzzled. We checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is - why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The blond replies....."Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?" Bill Gates and the president of General Motors have met for lunch, and Bill is going on and on about computer technology. "If automotive technology had kept pace with computer technology over the past few decades, you would now be driving a V-32 instead of a V-8, and it would have a top speed of 10,000 miles per hour," says Gates. "Or, you could have an economy car that weighs 30 pounds and gets a thousand miles to a gallon of gas. In either case, the sticker price of a new car would be less than $50. Why haven't you guys kept up?" The president of GM smiles and says, "Because the federal government won't let us build cars that crash four times a day." An old blind man walks into a lesbian bar, orders a beer and after a while says loudly: "Did you hear the one about the stupid blonde ?" The entire bar turns quiet in a second, and he hears a very angry voice: "I'm a wrestling champion, and my girlfriend is a professional boxer. Also with us are two karate experts, and a bodybuilder. We're all blond ! Are you sure you want to tell that joke ?!?" "No way! Not if I have to explain it five times....

    Name a Song

The old thread seems to be lost, so I'll start it anew... Rules stay the same, just two notes: 1. Keep it music related (Name a Song, Artist, Album). 2. This isn't Jeopardy. Keep your 'questions' general enough so that there's more than one correct answer. Name a song about a woman.
  7. With the growing popularity of our dear Old 55's Songfactors' Choice Top Ten and the promise of plenty more weekly Top 10's, I was pondering something. When I was trying to think of new nominees for week #5, I couldn't remember my nominations for week #1. Even worse I couldn't even remember the Top Ten #1! OK, so I could browse back to the first pages, but I thought what would that be like after 10 or 20 weeks or even later? Would I have to search half the thread to know whether my nomination was already in the the Top Ten a few weeks ago? To make a long story short I thought we should have a thread, where all the results of every week are archived, so that everyone who wants to search for past Top Tens, or wants to look up the positions of their nominations outside of the Top Tencan do so easily. And last but not least, you can get a look at the musical taste of the worlds best music community, the SongFactors I suggested it to Old 55, and he agreed that it would be a good idea... and voilà here's the Songfactors' Choice Top Ten Archive

    Who is that?

Easy rules: #1 posts the picture of a music related person #2 guesses the person (correctly) and posts the next picture I would suggest you could use google and wikipedia so that we can avoid answers like "that guy from (name of band)" I'm starting with an easy one: Who's that?
  9. You have a song in mind for the Songfacts Top Ten, but don't know if anyone else ever heard of it? or like? or would vote for it? here's the thread for you, just post a song here and everybody has the opportunity to listen, get to know it and maybe (preferably) give some feedback

    Al Gore Sells Out

Considering that it's owned by a sheikh, Al Jazeera is incredibly independent in its news coverage, probably equal to CNN or the BBC. I guess one shouldn't be surprised that Fox News has a differing opinion on that?

    The Oddball Game

Freddie Mercury is dead? Also he's the only one who was part of a band, while all the others were mostly doing music by themselves (not counting backing vocalists etc.)
  15. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-20730717 in a primary school on top of that
  16. People breaking into houses when they think they're empty in order to steal stuff and people breaking into houses knowing the occupants are at home practically expecting to inflict bodily harm on them to steal stuff are two completely different things. And yes, I didn't know that the latter was a very common way criminals are working... I never heard about that before, apart from the odd movie plot. Thanks for explaining, Shawna.

    Who is that?

...with the name of? (stage name is enough)
  18. Could you please explain what immigration has to do with gun related homicides? But anyway: List of countries by firearm-related death rate The USA has a rate of 10.2 gun related deaths per 100.000 inhabitants. France with its BIG immigration related problems has 3.00, the UK 0.25 and Germany (with a rate of immigrants roughly comparable to the US) has a rate of 1.10. Come to think of, that reminds me of an article from a couple months ago. "According to Germany's Der Spiegel, German police shot only 85 bullets in all of 2011. [...] most of those shots weren't even aimed anyone: "49 warning shots, 36 shots on suspects. 15 persons were injured, 6 were killed."" (Germany has a population of 82 mio, so feel free to multiply by 4 to get the equivalent amount for a population the size of the US). Also... "so what is a person to do when a criminal with a gun breaks into their home at 3:00 AM? Die? Or defend themselves?" does this really happen?
  19. Also it's just not true. Animals kill their own kind all the time. There are territorial fights, eg. Or pack animals where a new alpha male kills the offspring of his predecessor.
  20. and indeed, today I got the last bits and pieces for the presents... I must be a psychic or something

    Who is that?

This particular image is taken from this video... if you want to have it the easy way or maybe ask Tim or Ben, I'm sure they could know who it is
  22. Additionally to what RockyRaccoon said: it doesn't. There is no rape in Grand Theft Auto, there's not even sex on-screen (occurrences are only referenced in dialogue - where it is, to my knowledge, always consensual). And again, there is just no sound evidence that violence in fiction (movies, games, etc) causes a rise in violence in real life... here's a graph that shows the number of crime victims per 1000 US citizens together with the release of some particularly violent games: (note again that correlation doesn't mean causation; the fact that the rate is sinking isn't caused by the release of the games, it's simply a coincidence)
  23. Here's an in-depth discussion of a video game journalist about the role of mass-media and video game violence in such tragedies:
