The Songfactors' Choice Top Ten #39

OLD 55

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Sorry about the delay. I'm in Arizona, and in the last few days I took my cousin to see Borat, interviewed an Indigo Girl, saw an NFL football game (if the Cardinals count), guested on a radio show where I blabbed incessantly about this wonderful site, rode a horse and ate a cobb salad with Shawna.

The code that drives the Top 10 list you see on the Songfacts homepage (which mirrors what you see in the sidebar here) has evolved like a Galapogos turtle. The idea is to get people who are new to Songfacts to click a song and see what all the fuss is about, since what we do isn't all that intuitive. The code counts the number of hits a song receives in the day and week and comes up with the lists. We've had problems with the lists eating up bandwidth and slowing the site, which we fixed by making it refresh less frequently, and we've tried (with limited success) to get different songs to show up. The latest tweak me made was not counting hits from the list itself. The process is completely automated and a little more complicated than it looks. I have no explanation for why "Tom Sawyer" keeps showing up.

Here are my nominations for this list:

Stay - Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs

I've been trying for 4 weeks to get Mr. Williams to speak with me about this song and "Little Darling," which he also wrote.

Sonnet - The Verve

We get a lot of commentary in the added Songfacts, like "This is the best song ever." For this track, the contributor made a compelling case why it was one of the more brilliant and elegant songs out there, and he was right.

:)

Thanks, Carl . So , just to clarify then , the lists we see on the message board side are not truly reflective of the reality of hits on the main page ( nor what it presently may be showing ) and do not change very often due to how it negatively affects the site at times . Therefore , the 'Daily ' and 'Weekly 'Top Ten is a bit of a misnomer as displayed here , since it is not updated daily nor weekly ... correct ?
