How did we get this far along without mentioning

In The Legend of Xanadu Dave Dee says:

What was it to you that a man laid down his life for your love

Were those clear eyes of yours ever filled with the pain and the tears and the grief

Did you ever give your self to any one man in this whole wide world

Or did you love me and will you find your way back one day to Xanadu

Great song!

Here is the spoken-word part to one of the corniest songs of all-time, "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene:

Hey, you know what paradise is?

It's a lie

a fantasy we created about people and places

as we like them to be

but you know what truth is?

it's that little baby you're holding

and it's that man you fought with this morning

the same one you are gonna make love to tonight

that's truth that's love

OMG, that one's horrible. Good one!

Already posted was Kiss and Say Goodbye--one of my faves!

Don't forget Panama by Van Halen, The Rain by Oran "Juice" Jones, and Just To Be Close To You by the Commodores.

I'm going to submit my favorite AC/DC tune and quote the spoken part. Here it is from "Ain't No Fun Waiting Round To Be A Millionaire":

Hey, hello Howard,

How you doing friend?

Next door neighbor...

Oh yeah: get your f$%&in' jumbo jet off my airport!

I was going to say the Charlene one that JuniorNB mentioned. I agree, it's one of the most cringe-worthy songs ever!

Patti Smith does a lot of spoken word, for eg. in Wave, Horses, and Piss Factory, which she recites more than sings. And the beginning of Birdland ...

His father died and left him a little farm in New England.

All the long black funeral cars left the scene

And the boy was just standing there alone

Looking at the shiny red tractor

Him and his daddy used to sit inside

And circle the blue fields and grease the night.

It was as if someone had spread butter on all the fine points of the stars

cause when he looked up they started to slip.

Then he put his head in the crux of his arm

And he started to drift ...

The Show Must Go On is by Three Dog Night:

Baby, although I chose this lonely life

It seems it's stranglin' me now

All the wild men, big cigars, gigantic car

They're all laughin' at the lie

Oh, I've been used Ooo-oo-oo-oo

I've been a fool Oh, what a fool

I broke all the rules Oh, yeah

But I must let the show go on

Baby, there's an enormous crowd of people

They're all after my blood

I wish maybe they'd tear down the walls of this theatre

Let me out, let me out

Oh, I'm so blind

Oh, I'm blind

I wasted time

Wasted, wasted, wasted time

Walkin' on the wire, high wire

But I must let the show go on

Oh, I'm so blind

Oh, I'm blind

I wasted time

Wasted, wasted, all too much time

Walkin' on the wire, high wire

But I must let the show go on

Baby, I wish you'd help me escape

Help me get away

Leave me outside my address

Far away from this masquerade

'Cause I've been blind

Oh, so blind

I wasted time

Wasted, wasted, all too much time

Walkin' on the wire, high wire

But I must let the show go..

I must let the show go..

I must let the show go on

"Alright

Hey there all you middle men

Throw away your fancy clothes

And why you out there sittin' on a fence

So get off your arse and come down here

Cause rock 'n' roll ain't no riddle man

To me it makes good good sense

Good sense let's go"

"......... congressional reports. President Ford says that he is disappointed with Congresss performance. In Detroit, a Pontiac, Michigan youth was reported dead at the scene of a head-on collision on Grand Avenue this morning. The

youth was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the boulevard when he struck a delivery truck and was catapulted through the windshield of his

car. The driver of the truck is reported to be uninjured. Identities of both men are being withheld by local police.County legislatives today are expected to rally to the aid of striking

Longshoremen in hopes of ending the 9 month deadlock ..."

Funny you mentioned Diamond Dave. I never really considered him as a singer because he talked his way through most of the songs.

But, there's no denying that he was one hell of a frontman and performer.

As much as I've always admired Sammy Hagar (especially when he sang for Montrose) he simply didn't do Van Halen the justice of DLR.

One of my all-time favourite spoken (introduction) songs is . . .

Polk Salad Annie ~ Tony Joe White (1969)
