Please help. I am creating a CD for my son's 18th birthday and need suggestions on coming of age songs. Looking for songs (any genre) about hopes, dreams, aspirations, life advice, etc.

Hi Tory! Welcome to Songfacts! :)

Simple Man ~ Lynyrd Skynyrd.....The best coming of age song, from mother to son.

I'm the mother of 3 sons. They all loved the same music as I (luckily). I had a friend that did calligraphy, and I gave them each copies of the lyrics to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man on their 18th birthdays. I'll try to think of more, and I know there will be others here that will help! :)

And one of my favorites:

Forever Young ~ Mr. Bob Dylan

May God bless and keep you always,

May your wishes all come true,

May you always do for others

And let others do for you.

May you build a ladder to the stars

And climb on every rung,

May you stay forever young,

Forever young, forever young,

May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,

May you grow up to be true,

May you always know the truth

And see the lights surrounding you.

May you always be courageous,

Stand upright and be strong,

May you stay forever young,

Forever young, forever young,

May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,

May your feet always be swift,

May you have a strong foundation

When the winds of changes shift.

May your heart always be joyful,

May your song always be sung,

May you stay forever young,

Forever young, forever young,

May you stay forever young.

Here's a beautiful song that Joni Mitchell reportedly wrote for Neil Young for just such an occasion.

The Circle Game

Joni Mitchell

Yesterday a child came out to wonder

Caught a dragonfly inside a jar

Fearful when the sky was full of thunder

And tearful at the falling of a star

Then the child moved ten times round the seasons

Skated over ten clear frozen streams

Words like, when youre older, must appease him

And promises of someday make his dreams

And the seasons they go round and round

And the painted ponies go up and dawn

Were captive on the carousel of time

We cant return we can only look behind

From where we came

And go round and round and round

In the circle game.

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now

Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town

And they tell him,

Take your time, it wont be long now

Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down

And the seasons they go round and round

And the painted ponies go up and dawn

Were captive on the carousel of time

We cant return we can only look behind

From where we came

And go round and round and round

In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty

Though his dreams have lost some grandeur

Coming true

Therell be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty

Before the last revolving year is through.

And the seasons they go round and round

And the painted ponies go up and down

Were captive on the carousel of time

We cant return, we can only look behind

From where we came

And go round and round and round

In the circle game

When You're Young - The Jam

Life is timeless, days are long when you're young

You used to fall in love with everyone

Any guitar and any bass drum

Life is a drink and you get drunk when you're young

Life is new and there's things to be done

You can't wait to be grown up

Acceptance into the capital world

You pull on some weed, then you pull on someone when you're young

But you find out life isn't like that

It's so hard to comprehend

Why you set up your dreams to have them smashed in the end

But you don't mind you've got time on your side

And they're never gonna make you stand in line

You're just waiting for the right time

You're fearless and brave - you can't be stopped when you're young

You swear you're never ever gonna work for someone

No corporations for the new age sons

Tears of rage run down your face

But still you say it's fun

And you find out life isn't like that

It's so hard to understand

Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam

It's got you in its grip before you're born

It's done with the use of a dice and a board

They let you think you're king but you're really a pawn

You're fearless and brave - you can't be stopped when you're young

You used to fall in love with everyone

Any guitar and any bass drum

Just as I was leaving this thread, I remembered Kenny Rogers' "Coward of the County," which was turned into a TV movie set in World War II. I'm not sure if the message fits these days of glitz and deniability, but I agree with BOTH sentiments. :elvis:

Good Riddance(Time Of Your Life) - Green Day.

Not sure if it's about coming of age, but it's a good song about reflecting on one's life. And welcome to SF's.

I think that song's misinterpreted :P

"Mannish Boy" by Muddy Waters

Now, when I was young boy

At the age a-five,

My mother say I's gonna be

The greatest man alive,

But now I'm a man.

I'm past twenty-one.

I want you to believe me, honey,

I have lots o' fun.

Well, since the kid is now 21, it's definitely about time he learned....

MUSICAL INTERLUDE:

You gotta lick it, before we kick it

You gotta get it soft and wet so we can kick it

You gotta lick it, before we kick it

You gotta get it soft and wet so we can kick it

Baby work it

I met a real cutie

He had a nice tight bootie

He seemed to be the freaky lover type

Lets cut right through the case

Come on and get a taste

You've got to face it so that I can get hyped

You gotta lick it, before we kick it

You gotta get it soft and wet so we can kick it

You gotta lick it, before we kick it

You gotta get it soft and wet so we can kick it

Bridge:

(Spoken)

Before you can stick your move,

You gotta grin in the groove

You know men are dogs

So bark up somebody elses tree

Here boy, come and get it

Verse Two:

Come on and show you're able

And go below my navel

Don't be a tease, just give me what I like

I'm full of freakyness, so give my cat a kiss

And make it purr so we can do this right

You gotta lick it, before we kick it

You gotta get it soft and wet so we can kick it

You gotta lick it, before we kick it

You gotta get it soft and wet so we can kick it

You gotta lick it, before we kick it

You gotta get it soft and wet so we can kick it

You gotta lick it, before we kick it

You gotta get it soft and wet so we can kick it
