TheLizard
The government sweetens my coffee today. They're paying for my next two years tuition (and considering where I go, that'll be about $100,000). They're also, through Tricare, paying for my nearly $8,000 hospital bill and all the drugs and appointments that I'll be taking for quite some time following the scare from last week. All because my dad's in the army. So yes, fiscally, my entire political philosophy is based on my belief that the rest of the country should have what I have. If that makes me a socialist, than f**k yeah I'm a socialist.

TheLizard
That's probably more accurate, but this is America, there are no in betweens. The media wouldn't allow it.

You do understand - don't you, Tim - that "the government" is paying nothing; and that real people, your neighbors, who contribute payroll taxes are picking up the tab for your education. And I am sure they do not begrudge helping such a fine young man as you (and I say that in sincerity) as long as you understand the burden of responsibilty this places onto you to become a productive member of society who, in turn, works and pays taxes so that subsequent fine young people can receive similar benefits. This system is longstanding in America, has nothing to do with socialism, but everything to do with a desire for continued societal growth through education and the opportunities for increase that education provides. TheLizard
I pay taxes too, Ron. I'd rather they go to healthcare and education than war, coal, and bailing out evil CEOs.
Steel2Velvet
I pay taxes too, Ron. I'd rather they go to healthcare and education than war, coal, and bailing out evil CEOs. Then you are by no means a Socialist, Tim. You are an individual citizen who prefers self-determination of how your personal income taxes are distributed by the majority of elected representatives. Sounds like a capitalist member of a representative democracy to me.
TheLizard
I don't consider myself a socialist either. It's just what the right has labeled people like me in order to scare people. This is what the level of discourse in this nation has come to, I'm afraid. I believe in government intervention in regulation in the market, but not total takeover. And total takeover has not even come close to being suggested, despite, again, what the Becks and O'Reillys have been scaring people with. It's distressing. And I don't get angry every time my taxes go up. I've been all over this country because of the military. If seeing the state of disrepair of our infrastructure doesn't turn you into a tax-and-spend democrat, I don't know what will.
