Shawna
I don't follow #1 about gravity. The whole thing about falling toward the earth but moving sufficiently sideways to miss it. It's not clicking for me.
The Seeker
Gravity pulls them towards the earth, but at the same the centrifugal force pulls them to the side - it's the same with the earth orbiting the sun, or spaceships orbiting the earth. There isn't anything in space to stop an astronaut once he's moving, like air slows down things down here, so he just keeps moving round and round and round... because the earth's gravitational force pulls him towards it, he doesn't just float away; but because it's not any stronger or weaker than the centrifugal force which keeps him going round, he doesn't just fall towards it either. Hope I got that right Edited April 9, 2009 by Guest
TheLizard
There is no area in space without gravity. Everything has its own gravitational pull that pulls on everything else in the universe with a force of F=GMm/R^2.
