I don't like talking about essential albums for all music, because to make an accurate list, you need to include albums everyone owns, or you would be insinuating there are not a lot of true music fans out there. It's easier to do essential albums for specific genres.

Essential prog albums:

King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King

Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

Yes - Close to the Edge

Yes - Fragile

King Crimson - In The Wake of the Poisedon

(in my opinion) Gentle Giant - In a Glass House

ELP - Tarkus

ELP - Brain Salad Surgery

Rush - 2112

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

Kevin, I personally think "definitely maybe" is oasis's masterpiece

I find this question very difficult to answer, I don't have that many of the ones already mentioned because they are not my thing, and the ones i consider essential are not popular with people here.

ok here's a few (not necessarily my faves though):

"ok computer"-radiohead, "disintegration"-the cure, "the doors"-the doors, "dark side of the moon"-pink floyd, "nevermind"-nirvana,
