OLD 55
Edna, I LOVE the Carpenters. I couldn't believe it the day I heard that Karen had died, only 32 years old. That affected me more than John Lennon's death. She had perhaps the "purest" voice and phrasing I've ever heard. Also, I think a lot of people underestimate Richard's talent: great arrangements, played piano, did backup vocals. Yoi can make a list of Sad Songs just from their's alone ! Goodbye To Love as you said + 6 more of my favourites Hurting Each Other Rainy Days And Mondays Superstar Yesterday Once More Solitaire This Masquerade ANOTHER who specialised in Sad Songs was Roy Orbison. No wonder. He lost his first wife Claudette in a motorcycle accident and two of his children in a fire + he had health problems until his untimely death from a heart attack at age 52. Here's my chronological list of the best Big O Sad Songs. Only The Lonely I'm Hurtin' Love Hurts Crying (one of my nominations for Best song of the 1960s) The Crowd Leah Love Star Distant Drums Mama In Dreams Pretty Paper (a CLASSIC written by Willie Nelson) Borne On The Wind It's Over (THE saddest) Goodnight Ride Away Communication Breakdown There Won't Be Many Coming Home (anti-war song)
SoulGirl
you're so right mr 55, karen's phrasing was immaculate. and their harmonies were very complex and beautiful. my best friend sang 'we;ve only just begun' for her music recital and i was oneof her backing vocalists - the harmony lines are just gorgeous! edna
Old55, I think Roy Orbison is actually THE sad songwritter. He´s great... I knew about his tragic life and I saw him on a TV set by the time he was back with... Tom Petty and others? Oh, it´s very late and I can´t remember now... well, you know who I mean. Roy Orbison was a real artist... I love very much "Solitaire" and "I´ll say goodbye to love" (Carpenters), as "Yesterday", "Only Yesterday" "Masquerade", "We´ve only just begun" and even "Close to you". Yes, I love the Rolling Stones too, I took candy from strangers...(and it was good!!!) :happybanana: :happybanana:

I knew about his tragic life and I saw him on a TV set by the time he was back with The Traveling Wilburys. Yes Edna - he made even songs with happy endings sound sad. I think I missed "Goodbye To Love" on my Carpenters' list? It certainly should have been there.

edna
"Happy Xmas (War is over)". It begins with John Lennon singing "...and so this is Christmas" and it was being played all the time in London that Christmas after he had been shot... it´ll always make me sad. I won't tell if you won't! Her songs have always made me cry ~ "Think Twice" was the first one to really make me wail when a music teacher played it to us at school in a music lesson, I got some stick for that with my friends! I downloaded some of her tracks this week, and they still have the same effect ~ "Because You Loved Me", "Falling Into You", "The Power Of Love". CanAm
Edna, I LOVE the Carpenters. I couldn't believe it the day I heard that Karen had died, only 32 years old. Also, I think a lot of people underestimate Richard's talent: great arrangements, played piano, did backup vocals. You're so right, Darryl. She had one of the richest alto voices in popular music. Two of the Carpenters' songs that never fail to make me misty-eyed are Crescent Moon and Yesterday once more. Other sad songs I particularly like are: Goodbye Norma Jean - Elton John It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference (sung by Todd Rundgren or The Manhattan Transfer) In My Life - The Beatles Photographs and Memories - Jim Croce Rhythm of The Blues - Mary Chapin Carpenter Without You - Nilsson Landslide - Fleetwood Mac Love This Time & You're The One I Love - Jane Olivor :guitar:
