Shawna
oh. my. goodness. Is it that time already? Of every movie nominated, I have seen only one: Moneyball. And despite knowing the person it's all about (Billy Beane), I didn't think the movie was Oscar-worthy, and I almost never think that Brad Pitt is Oscar-worthy. I'll be taking some really wild stabs this year. Edit: I'm lying. I did see Bridesmaids. In my humble opinion, that one should be in the Best Picture category. But they never nominate comedies. Marisa Tomei's Oscar was an anomaly (for "My Cousin Vinny")

MindCrime
I've never heard of any of these movies or most of the actors nominated. I'll participate, but not until after I do some research on what these movies are about.
TheLizard
The only movies I've seen that are nominated for anything this year are Midnight In Paris and The Muppets (both great!). So I'll just go by what I know about these movies and what seems most Oscar bait-y. CanAm
I've only seen one of the nominated films and that was Hugo which was an outstanding picture. However, I don't think it has a chance in hell of winning. There's a few I hope I'm wrong on. And Shawna, I would venture to say that Brad Pitt was Oscar-worthy in "12 Monkeys".

Steel2Velvet
Agreed, he was oscar-worthy for Kalifornia. So out-of-character in that neither his looks nor edge for humor aided his acting, yet totally believable characterization. Sort of a similar portrayal as Charlize Theron in Monster. (And she won for that, no?)

MindCrime
I can't believe Jean Dujardin won for best actor. He didn't even speak any lines in The Artist. I just rolled my eyes when it won best picture. I also don't understand how it won best directing, the director didn't really do anything innovative to set this film apart, just went over the basic point and shoot technique that's been done before. Carl
I just rolled my eyes when it won best picture. This might be a turning point in Oscar voting. This movie is so incredibly lame and unappealing to anyone without an AARP membership, that the academy might start voting for movies people actually want to see, which is what they used to do. I get how The Artist had to tell a story with lots of restrictions, but the gimmick quickly wore off for me, and it was obvious that this was a nostalgia piece for people who actually remember silent films. To kill time in my brain during this movie, I thought about other films that dealt with the silent-to-talkie transition, and how much better they were: Singing In The Rain and Sunset Boulevard. If you ever get the urge to see The Artist, rent one of those instead. As for the Oscar telecast, it had some great moments. It sounded like they finally fired Bruce Villanch and wrote some material for the presenters that allowed them to do what they do best: act. The Emma Stone/Ben Stiller and Gwen Paltrow/Robert Downey Jr. bits were really funny, and it's because they got to stay in character the whole time. And Cirque should come back every year. Congrats Mike, looks like you got it.
Farin
I actually like The Artist But then again I don't have any problems with silent movies in general... Metropolis, Nosferatu, Dr. Caligari, or films by Chaplin or Keaton are all very very good and still watchable today... also there was a funny "modern" silent movie a couple of years ago by Franka Potente (the Lola of "Run Lola Run", if that tells you anything), about a punk turning up at a silent-film-era family it probably didn't make it to the US - it barely got much attention here - but it was still cool
RockyRaccoon
My favorite silent movie is "Silent Movie", the Mel Brooks movie.
