lonelyday Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Heya, i'm looking for songs with great drum solos or just an extra emphasis with drums...just coz i feel like it. So if anyone has any suggestions that'd be great!
TheLizard Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 First one that comes to mind: "Moby Dick"- Led Zeppelin
Foolonthehill Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 One Word- Mahavishnu Orchestra I think that's the one with an awesome drum solo. I'll have to listen to make sure.
Lea Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Don't know if this is what your looking for but there are awesome drum solo's in these songs Tarkus - Carl Palmer (ELP) Toccata - Carl Palmer (ELP) Tank - Carl Palmer (ELP) Soul Sacrifice - Mike Shrieve (Santana) Toad - Ginger Baker (Cream)
skybluesky Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 I know Phil COllins is vilified around here, but the drums in "In the Air Tonight" are spectacular.
Foolonthehill Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 I would never villify Phil Collins as a drummer, he was an integral part of what was possibly the best band in the world at that time. He just can't come close to Peter Gabriel on the lead vocals front.
Foolonthehill Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Yeah "One Word" is the one with the crazy drumming, I just checked. I agree about Carl Palmer. Rush's drummer, Neil Peart, plays some great fills. Check out 2112, the second segment in particular.
phil Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Won't Get Fooled Again - Keith Moon Fire - (Hendrix) - Mitch Mitchell
edna Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Soul Sacrifice - Mike Shrieve (Santana) The best solo I ever heard... he was 16 or 17 when he performed it at Woodstock.
blind-fitter Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 "Kings Of The Wild Frontier" - Adam And The Ants
Farin Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 A song for the Dead ~ QotSA (Live at Rock Werchter, feat. Dave Grohl on drums and Mark Lanegan on vocals)
Viaene Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 chad smith (red hot chili peppers) was really good on his drums at Slane Castle
bluesboy Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 King Sunny Ade and His African Beats African talking drums Sunny Ti de Ariya Touted in the early '80s as the next Bob Marley... he fizzled after a couple of albums. JuJu music from West Africa. 365 Is My Number/ The Message Synchro System
c_s_1987 Posted April 20, 2008 Report Posted April 20, 2008 The Cinema Show - Genesis (if you are not convinced that Phil Collins is an excellent drummer, listen to this song and you should be) Tom Sawyer - Rush YYZ - Rush Four Sticks - Led Zeppelin (yes, four drumsticks ) Karn Evil 9 - ELP You Could Be Mine - Guns N' Roses
lonelyday Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Thanks for all the great suggestions! Uni pretty much ate me whole this semester and still hasn't quite spat me out yet, but I've made a list so now I can hunt down these songs and start listening
Udo Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Dreams by the Cranberries features some excellent cacophonic percussion.
Heard It On The XM Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I would never villify Phil Collins as a drummer, he was an integral part of what was possibly the best band in the world at that time. He just can't come close to Peter Gabriel on the lead vocals front. Or the songwriting front, for that matter. Back on topic, don't forget the drum solo in Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". Also, someone mentioned "Moby Dick", but an even better John Bonham drum song is "Bonzo's Montreux" (from the Coda album). And I'm not sure if this counts, but Frank Beard is tapping his drumsticks on something (probably the edge of one of his drums) during the first part of ZZ Top's "LaGrange".
JumboXL Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Keith Moon in Happy Jack, by The Who, my favourite. Check out Cozy Powell too, for example: Dance with the devil.
