Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees...well kind of Rock and Roll!

... And they aren't a rock group. They are rap/slash hip hop group who added varaitions of "rock" to their music. Putting them in the same catagory with rock groups is just plain wrong.

In fact, they began as a Bad Brains-influenced punk-rock band, releasing a full-on punk rock EP, "Pollywog Stew"- the first item of theirs I ever bought, (in 1985, from punk/hardcore specialist record shop Bunker in Grenoble, France). From the same esteemed outlet, I also purchased their follow-up, the 12" EP "Cookie Puss", which saw their first dabblings in scratch-mixing and hip-hop beats. "Licenced To Ill", melding a rather juvenile punk attitude with hip-hop techniques and metal guitar riffs, came out in 1986, but I never bought it. The follow-up album, "Paul's Boutique" (1988), began the series of quality albums upon which their musical reputation is based.

In any case, for me, the focus of the discussion has changed. A few days ago, I was contending that since rock'n'roll is little more than rhythm'n'blues in disguise, (black music appropriated by white people???), The Beastie Boys have as much in common with the roots of rock'n'roll as many a prog rock band might have. Today, I am merely countering unwarranted and ill-informed criticism of The Beasties, levelled by someone who clearly isn't familiar with their impressive body of work.

Whether they should or shouldn't be considered eligible for the R'n'R Hall Of Fame matters not a jot.

no, I don't really care if you agree with my opinion or not - it's more the way you answer... sorry if I got that wrong, but you always seem to take everything a bit too important, and if I may be frank, a few of your posts come of a bit more harsh than necessary  :P

and to answer your question:

some people say Bob Dylan invented Rap with this song (that's not true of course - there were others before him ;) )

If I come off as being harsh,I appologize to you and anybody else who feels that way. I am like most on here. Very passionate about music and music being very important in my life. I could go online and find anything and everything to back up something I said. When I make a comment on here,it is in most cases what I feel in my heart. Not what this person or that person said about whatever. It's my own opinion. I don't care if everybody agrees or if nobody does. I'm not here just to go along with the crowd and agree with everything everybody comments about. This whole thing was about if The Beastie Boys deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And I have been pounded about my views by several including some who feel because I haven't listened to any of their works in over 20 years I shouldn't comment on them or their works. Does that mean nobody can make a negative comment about an artist if they haven't heard all of that artists works? If I hear a couple songs of an artist and I know I will never like them, does that mean I have no right to disagree with somebody when they say that artist is a genius? I thought this site was about likes and dislikes of music. I think it would be a pretty boring site if we all agreed on everything. And I again applogize to any and all I have ever offended on here.

There have been elements of rap in rock music since all the way back into the 1960's (and possibly even further back than that). A lot of artists have used the spoken word style of singing on some of their songs. Bob Dylan may have been the first truly recognizable rapper. Does anyone remember "Subterranean Homesick Blues"?

The Stones, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper, Grateful Dead, INXS, and Billy Joel (just to name a few) have all used a similar lyrical style at one time or another...Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" probably being the most recognizable.

I'm probably the biggest hater of rap music you may ever find. It's not because of the lyrical style, it's because that most of the rap artists of today are not using it as an experimental mode of deseminating their music, they're using it because they have very little (if any) musical talent. Most of the music is ripped off from other artists, most of the lyrics condone violence and misogyny, and most of the artists convey a counterfeit image. They are not musicians; they are ACTORS. Just check out your local TV and movie listings. You'll see some 30 to 50 current or former rappers starring in them.

Eminem didn't beat up his mother (if he did, he'd be in jail). Fifty Cent wasn't shot nine times (if he had been, he'd be f***ing dead!). Tupac Shakur may be the only true-to-life rapper. He was shot a mere three times, and he DIED from it. And if I had to guess, I would say that his record company had something to do with it, because when you die you sell more albums.

Good night, all.

You do have every right to say what you believe and I will smack anyone who says otherwise. I am obviously in the pro-Beastie Boys camp, but it's cool that you aren't. I love this place because we really can talk about such matters in a heated manner without (hopefully) getting too upset about it. Stand your ground, brother.

there's no need to apologize since I didn't feel attacked or something like that... :)

but...

this is basically what I meant... :P

nobody is "pounding" you for your opinions and, I'm sorry if I don't really get the fine nuances of the English language, but to me it sounds as if you felt offended by our posts...

I certainly hope that's not the case :)

I have never been offended on here. I like these heated discussions. Actually it's been pretty boring on here for weeks untill the past few days. I like it here too but I will speak my mind and at times I know it comes off as harsh or being a smartazz. Sometimes I read over some things I have posted and realize I could have put things a little different. But I will always stick to my guns and stand my ground. Guess that means I "Fight For My Right" to say what I think.

gee, the last time I said something to the contrary of a positive comment about rap, I was tied up by my thumbs and verbally whipped with a limp spaghetti noodle.

It'll be intriguing to see if anyone has the b*lls to do that to you.

I loved what he said and I agree with it totally. I have always said that rap music is the worst thing to ever happen to popular music. Of course by saying that I'm sure I will be labeled, among other things,a racist. It has nothing to do with race, just the music itself,if you can call it that. And as far as the "talent" of rap artists, doesn't take a lot of talent to come up with some words that rhyme with "ho".

As has been said a million times here, when this subject is broached, there are "good" and "bad" rap artists, just as there are "good" and "bad" rock/pop/country/jazz/etc. artists.

And, as far as I'm concerned, if Miles Davis can be in the hall then so can the Beastie Boys. :)

I've got the b*lls to take on Sammy any day of the week, but I shall refrain since it is a lovely Friday afternoon and I don't want to put any negative vibes in my mojo. The reason I will give him a pass is because he had sense enough to put the all important word "most" in front of his statements. That way he can say he doesn't like rap, but leaves the window open that there might be some decent stuff out there.
