Farin
What do you think about a boykott of the Olympic Games '08 in Beijing? yes, no, why?
TheLizard
As far as I can tell, the majority of Americans don't give a crap about the Olympics this year.
Viaene
A boycot won't free those poor tibettans I fear Edited March 23, 2008 by Guest spelling mistake, gimme a break
Farin
^^Tim: really? I didn't know that ^ yes, that's pretty much my current opinion too... a boycott would cause that the majority of the people would ignore that... a better idea could maybe be some form of political statement (a peaceful one) of the athletes... maybe something like these "raising fists" (or would it?) TheLizard
Yeah, I don't know anybody who is interested in it this year. Even I'm pretty much apathetic, and I normally enjoy the Olympics. Maybe I'll feel different when we get closer to the actually event, or maybe it's because part of the coolness of the Olympics is getting to understand the culture of country it is being held in, and China doesn't interest me. Viaene
yeah perhaps, or like holding up half mast flags during the opening ceremony..
Farin
I just found an interesting news report: German Pole Vaulter Plans Tibet Protest at Olympics
Viaene
I didn't know the Olympics prohibited political statements, but then again that is quite logic. I hope she doesn't get into much trouble and find more participants, a solo action wont be very effective.
The Seeker
I didn't even know they're this year The last one was nice... the first and only time I actually watched some of it. I won't have a TV this year anyway I think, so I don't care much. It'd be different if I was at home. As for a boycott... it may take place in China, but it's not about Chinese athletes. I think there should be a form of protest, but not quite a boycott. Maybe Tibetan teams. (no, I'm not serious )
miamisammy29
The only Olympics that really matter are the Winter Olympics.
Farin
yeah - that's where Germany usually holds the top placement in the medal ranking...
miamisammy29
No, Farin, that's the SPECIAL Olympics. A lot of Germans tend to get the two confused.

Uncle Joe
Boycotting Olympics never accomplishes anything but depriving the athletes of their opportunity. It never solves anything politically. Rather, we should boycott soccer.

bluesboy
I remember our Dad used to take the family to Dodger games at the Los Angeles Coliseum back in 1959,'60 and '61 before Chavez Ravine was built. That left field fence was weird.
