Red Fish
The smell of basements makes me gag... just thinking about it is enough, I don't even have to smell it. But the thing is that I love that typical basement smell. I'd really like to know what causes that... it's really weird lol
MarcM
You like the smell of mildewed plaster?
edna
There´s something I like in the smell of the basements... Don´t know why. I loved the smell of the plaster too.
Kevin
I like the smell and atmosphere of the basements of pre-war houses such as those of my aunt and uncles , grandparents or family friends : old leather , paper from old books /magazines , old photos and picures, canned preserves , toys and games from yesteryear , a treasure trove of out-of-date items - rather like a museum of sorts . Modern basements are often just a relaxing extension of the house or sterile storage .
skybluesky
I prefer attics to basements. I feel as though I'm burried alive when I'm in a basement.
invisible_r
it doesn't make me gag but I agree, tt's just too musty and horrible! some antique type shops also smell like that because most of the stuff they sell was stored in one of the smelly basements. Kevin
Interestingly , as our climates are not all that different , houses in the mid-west of Canada rarely have or use an attic space - usually just insulation up there . I imagine both Greece and Britain being far more damp and the basements smelling rather dank , for sure . Northern N.America being drier doesn't smell quite as strongly below ground , but I imagine basements on both coasts do .
invisible_r
to be honest, the basement in both my parents house does not smell at all so I dunno why I said that... I sort of pictured a damp basement and imagined it smelled bad
Kevin
If they are looked after and aired from time to time they should be alright . a lot of people just leave them though .
