OLD 55
Just a few words before Lucky opens nominations! To see how it feels to "get back in harness" again, I'm going to do this week's Top Ten with Lucky. Farin is taking a break, although he might still nominate and vote. Also we're making a slight change. Nothing too drastic. A number of 'seminal' pre Rock And Roll songs were recorded in the mid to late 1940s, mainly after WW2 - ones which always figure in discussions of "What was the first Rock And Roll Song ?" To give the opportunity for some of these to be nominated, we're changing our '1950s on' policy to '1945 on'. Thanks Lucky. Over to you.

I just remembered that Thursday is Elvis' 30th Death Anniversary, so I've gotta nominate one of his. I'm biased though, because I like almost all of his songs. :guitar:

Kevin
Song Parodies -> Battle of New Orleans 2005 "Battle of New Orleans" Based on the performance by Johnny Horton "Battle of New Orleans 2005" Parody by The Jim Hoy Band Well, in twenty and oh-five we took a little trip along with all our buddies down the mighty Mississip. We took a little cash and we took a little beads, And we caught the Mardis Gras near the town of New Orleans. We throwed our beads and the chicks they kept a flashin'. And now there's even more than there was a while ago. We throwed once more and they began to runnin' down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Well, I seen meteoroligists walkin 'round and just then he was talkin' to a guy who said that this is CNN He gave us a warning 'bout some more trouble than a scud and soon a major storm that would make the city mud. The news said Andrew used to be number one, but Katrina's is a comin' with a bullet in her gun. Old FEMA said they didn't give a dang, we gonna miss the twitches of the hurricane. We stopped our fun and the winds they kept a'comin. They seemed a little higher than they was a while ago. We delayed once more and figured that we'd start to runnin' if the storm came in from the Gulf of Mexico. Well, we looked down the river and we seen the rains come, and there must have been them thunderstorms beatin' like a drum. They stormed so high and they made their hearing ring while we stood by our cotton bales and didn't say a thing. Things flying all around us sure was quite a surprise but we didn't know hurricanes got calmer in the eyes. We held out until the center came and spared us hell, Til again the eye passed and Katrina began to yell. We crapped our pants and the storm it kept a'comin. There wasn't any power like there was a while ago. We looked outside and saw the we were surrounded We were in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Well, we dialed our phones til the system melted down, so we grabbed an alligator and we rode him around town, We didn't care what PETA thought, didn''t pay 'em no mind, and actually it was all the transportation we could find. We can't go home and we'll never be content till we get cash and apology from Bush the President. But it all don't matter, the levees are bustin' at the seams, Welcome to the swimmin' hole we call New New Orleans.

Kevin
^ Now HOW weak is that against a couple of great army ballads !?! AND- just what in the hell are they ' champions ' of ?!
OLD 55
What's wrong with you Ballad Of The Green Berets by Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler may have been a soul stirring ballad during the Vietnam War, but it didn't do anything for me then or now ! I'll vote for the great Johnny Horton's Ballad Of New Orleans, though. Thou Sucketh ! (Darryl to Kevin after another smart comment).
Kevin
That's ONE more vote than I thought I'd get ... C'mon; you hummed and sung along - I know you did ... it's a good tune ! Do we all have to be pretend to be peaceniks to get a vote ?! I loved those songs as a kid - martial music was rare , unusual and stirring . The sentiments don't mean so much , I didn't think , but if you liked the song - go for it ! I still sing and hum them occasionally , without thought . Fortunately , I guess , I live in a place or frame of mind that can love the military and dislike it equally , and then back again ... Vote Green Beret - they're tougher bastards than anyone here and would likely be interesting to share a beer with !
OLD 55
No Kevvy - it wasn't really very big over here. We were listening to 'Flower Power' songs in 1966, Mamas & The Papas, Donovan, Lovin' Spoonful...ahh !
