Carl Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 Yeah, we've always tried to keep the database s--t and f--k free, but I see what you mean. If you haven't seen Shawna's Soundtracks of the Soldiers article, give it a read this Veteran's Day.
Carl Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 What does it say about us as a musical culture when we are sampling Avril Lavigne? http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=21452
Farin Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 Rihanna told Spin magazine: "It's a song you would hear in a bar but I think you could also hear it all over pop radio. It's really grungy and melodic and catchy. And the way the producers sampled Avril — it's like she's an instrument. It's really cool how they combined [the song] with her vocals." It's really interesting how the artist doesn't seem to have any say or interest in what the song is supposed to sound like... I mean I certainly didn't expect an 'I' in the last sentence but not even a 'We'?
TheLizard Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 Yeah, that's a pretty telling pronoun...
Shawna Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Yeah, we've always tried to keep the database s--t and f--k free, but I see what you mean. If you haven't seen Shawna's Soundtracks of the Soldiers article, give it a read this Veteran's Day. Last I saw, there was no f--k or s--t mentioned anywhere in that article.
Farin Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Last I saw, there was no f--k or s--t mentioned anywhere in that article. that part of his post was in reply to my post above
Carl Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Yeah, those were separate thoughts Shawna. Sorry about that. It's really interesting how the artist doesn't seem to have any say or interest in what the song is supposed to sound like... I mean I certainly didn't expect an 'I' in the last sentence but not even a 'We'? Seems the singers aren't so worried about claiming credit for creating the songs anymore, like they were in the Avril Lavigne/Michelle Branch/Vanessa Carlton days. Miley Cyrus had to explain to a reporter that she didn't write Party in the USA, and therefore didn't know what Jay-Z song she was singing about.
MindCrime Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 We Built this City is #1 on the daily list. WTF, really?
Farin Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 I never was a fan of that Dirty Dancing song "(I've had) The Time of My Life", not by a long shot, but what The Black Eyed Peas now did to it... that 'tops' it by far
Farin Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 do tell, what did they do? see/hear for yourself
RockyRaccoon Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 DIRTY BIT You know, it seems that the Black Eyed Peas have figured out that they could pretty much record the ABCs and make millions of dollars on it. So they don't bother making interesting music anymore, at least, not like they used to.
Farin Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 not like they used to. I must have missed that
TheLizard Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Pre-Fergie they were almost decent.
RockyRaccoon Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 I mean, I'm not saying that the Black Eyed Peas are the best band around, but they used to be not retarded. They used to actually at least write stuff that required at least a slight ability at rapping to write. I mean, I always liked this song. I mean, there's a lot worse out there. They could be Drake.
Farin Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 I mean, I always liked this song. can't see the video in my country - what song is it? I mean, there's a lot worse out there. that's true of course
Farin Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 read today that 'hipster' is out (it's like so '00s), the new style of importance is prepster

So they don't bother making interesting music anymore, at least, not like they used to. A lot of bands have figured that out. That's not to say that everything out there right now is crap, quite the opposite. Rather, they've discovered that when you know a sizable chunk of your audience will buy what you release, no matter what, there's no real incentive for you to put out quality material since the quality is immaterial to the people who will be buying it.

Remember when Puff Daddy was doing this? He even boosted Led Zeppelin. I think these days when the Peas do it, it gives them a relatively easy hit.
