invisible_r Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 "How Proust can save your life" by Alain de Botton Interesting read although not as good as I expected, mainly because my expectations were really high after reading another book of his,"The consolations of philosophy", which was amazing
Uncle Joe Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 (edited) I have to read it And like my English lecturer said... anyone who finds that book arousing is a little twisted Then why on earth does she make you read it? And why do you? Here's all you need.... Condensed Version For The Easily Bored Note To Rachel: I feel your pain. Edited April 2, 2008 by Guest To add a note to Rachel, of course.
The Seeker Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 I don't know... it's one of 20 or so books we have to read this year. I'm currently trying to write an essay about it (which is why I wanted Radhi's essay ) Thanks for the summary!

Shawna Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Sparknotes saved my life last year when I was supposed to read "Bless Me, Ultima". that books title sounds mighty familiar... I bet I was supposed to read that in English a couple years ago... I don't believe I actually read any of the books I was supposed to in that class... but the instructor loved my writing and gave me A's across the entire year.
Uncle Joe Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) Yes Shawna...we're sure it was your writing that he loved. Mmmmm hmmmm. Edited April 4, 2008 by Guest Correcting a misspelled word.
Shawna Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) Yes Shawna...we're sure it was your writing that he loved. Mmmmm hmmmm. the instructor was a she, and she was married. Edited April 4, 2008 by Guest Corrected a grievous misspelling.
Uncle Joe Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 I stand corrected. I know you don't swing that way.
The Seeker Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 Edited by UncleJoe on 04/04/08 02:41:13 PM. Reason for edit: Corrected a grievous misspelling. I know it's your own typo you corrected so that's completely different and you are a wonderful mod, but this reminds me of this forum I was on for a while... this one mod (who was 15 or 16) took to correcting other people's posts all of a sudden... she'd edit their posts and mark mistakes in red, and add notes on spelling and grammar at the end. Every single post
Uncle Joe Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) I don't do that. And I won't. Oh, and thank you. You're a wonderful SFer, too. Edited April 4, 2008 by Guest Forgot to thank Fin.

Every single post OMG I would have went gone to that site just to watch her doing it To Too funny. Maybe she'll grow up to be an English teacher
Shawna Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 ooo now I'm curious... I don't remember a grievous misspelling... What'd you say? What'd you say??
Farin Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 and nobody noticed until after you edited it and 'had to' explain it again

_Laurie_ Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 I typoed wrinting instead of writing. I saw that...I thought you did that on purpose...
Uncle Joe Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 I'm so transparent. Maybe I should get dressed?
The Seeker Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I was rather sceptical when I got it (and the sequel too... both around 1100 pages) for my birthday, because it didn't sound like the kind of book I'd like... it tells the story of a cathedral being built in the 12th century, and the people associated with it. I needn't have worried... It's one of the best books I've ever read and I had to force myself to put it down from time to time because I didn't want to finish it within four days. 100/10
Farin Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 I like that book, even though I don't normally read medieval themed novels... and while it took me more than four days, I think I did finish it within one week
The Seeker Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 Yes, me too. Now I'm trying not to look at the sequel lying on my desk...
Lea Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 (edited) Ok you guys talked me into it. I have 2 new credits in my acct. for books so I'll give it a try. They just won the best audio book award nominations that Audible had going a couple of weeks ago. They ended up running up against each other(it was kind of like the tens we do. Process of voting elimination)and I think the 2nd one might have won. I didn't get them because I didn't think they sounded like something I'd like but I see you guys thought the same so I'll give them a try Thanks guys. Edited April 8, 2008 by Guest Spelling error as usual.
Uncle Joe Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Follett wrote many great mystery novels. Some becaame movies...good ones like Eye Of The Needle.
