Aunt_Acid
You know, this has probably been covered, but everyone else reposts and reposts heavily covered topics and gets away with it. This topic is about solos on anything like Sax, Violin, Flute, Trombone, Trumpet, Cello, Jew's Harp, or other things that aren't a staple of rock bands. The reason I thought of this is because I just bought Relics by Pink Floyd, and really liked the Trombone solo on Biding My Time. It's grand. A great flute solo is in Anonymous by Focus. And my favorite violin solo is probably the one in that off-the-wall version of I'm A Believer. I'm not sure who did it, but that violin solo in the middle of it is just so cool. InsaneTim
As a fiddle player I've always loved the violin solo at the end of "Baba O'Riley" by The Who. And, of course AC/DC's "It's A Long Way To The Top" has a rockin' bagpipe part.
Aunt_Acid
Yeah, Baba O' Reily! How could I forget?!
Batman
Frank Zappa's (or was it Captain Beefheart's?) "Willie the Pimp" has an awesome violin intro. Not a solo, but a great riff.
Aunt_Acid
I'd just like to add that in "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", the devil sucked.
_jr_
It's not a solo, really, but the banjo at the end of the Eagle's version of Take It Easy is pretty cool.
Batman
How about "Crosstown Traffic" and that kazoo solo? Pretty cool, eh?
_jr_
Speaking of which, the kazoo solo in Queen's 'Seaside Rendezvous' is cool, too.
Batman
and how about "Frankenstein" and that saxaphone solo?

Jimmy1104
Peter Frampton's mouthbox thingy (can someone help me with the name of that contraption) that he used on Do You Feel Like I Do. Aunt_Acid
The Framptone Talk Box. I was just looking for them on ebay, but I've spent way too much money on there already. There's still so many more instruments I want to buy. I wish I was richand spoiled like Rachel.

Aunt_Acid
There's a song called The Oldman's Plot by some Japanese person with a pretty cool Theremin solo.
katie_sane
I love the flute solo in 'Walk Away Renee' by The Left Banke and the violin at the start of Bowie's version of 'Sorrow' then the sax at the end. I like the flute in 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away' by The Beatles and the mouth organ in 'Love Me Do'.
johnnyguitar
The synth/moog type solo on Virginia Plain (Roxy Music) always gets me playing air keyboards ...nnnnnyaaa eee aaaay......neeeeye ooooh. By the way, trivia buffs. The violin solo on Baba O'Reilly was played by a guy called Dave Arbus. Apparently it was a last minute studio decision to try a violin outro and one of the Who's roadies (one Chalky Chalkley) had just come off a tour with a band called East of Eden who had a violinist and who he knew lived just around the corner...he nipped round in Moonies Roller and got him out of bed...he did it in one take....well, that's the story Chalky told me and, on researching it a bit, the story stacks up....how sad am I
_jr_
The horn solo on 'Penny Lane' is cool. I forget the name of what kind of horn it is, tough.

edna
Curved Air have some great violin intro in their album "Air Cut". Jefferson Starship also had good violin solos with Papa John Creach. I can´t remember the songs but I know they are in the "Dragonfly" album and probably also on "Baron VonToolsomething..." I don´t think piano counts as it´s the base for rockabilly, see Jerry Lee Lewis... or Elton John, Billy Joel, etc.
bluesboy
Honorable mention has to be made to the Beatles + George Martin for experimenting with the likes of a string quartet in ('66). for instance Eleanor Rigby blazed a trail to a different direction you could go in rock music and rock expanded with different instruments used.
