Jazzcat
A fair amount of people credit "Good Rockin' Tonight" by Roy Brown. Recorded in 1947. Lots of others would say "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley & the Comets in 1954 as the first R&R "hit".

_jr_
Well, I thought "Shake Rattle and Roll" was better than Rock Around the Clock, personally. I think, probably, there was 'rock an roll' before that, just not recognized as such. Let's ask the resident Research Expert.....bluesboy?

SoulGirl
i love that scene in back to the future when michael j fox starts rocking out playing johnny b. goode and this guy calls his cousin chuck saying 'you know that sound you were looking for, it think this is it!' nice little touch
Aunt_Acid
I recently saw that scene parodied, and I can't remember what it was on. I think Family Guy, but I'm not sure. Back To The Future was a great movie.

Reminds me of the scene in "Peggy Lou got married" where she gives the paper to John Cage with the lyrics of his future hit... "Oh, it´s great, but why not sing "She loves you oh oh oh"... edna
I always thought it was Nicholas Cage. Now I see, Bazooka... so it´s definitely "James" Wesley Harding, not "John"...
bazooka
so it´s definitely "James" Wesley Harding Good catch, edna. Bob says he hadn't noticed the typo. He'll see to it personally that they get it right next time it's re-issued.
