johnnyguitar Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 Strawberry Alarm Clock. Jeez, how rude do you have to get? Strawberry what? Well, I for one am
blind-fitter Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 A few minutes ago I was listening to "Prime Mover" by Zodiac Mindwarp and The Love Reaction, and thought, "now that's a ridiculous name..."
johnnyguitar Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 I've met one of the guitarists in Zodiac Mindwarp...
Heard It On The XM Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 My nominees (that haven't already been spoken for) : Dayglo AbortionsLothar and the Hand PeopleMannheim Steamroller (with a name like that you'd expect them to be a hard-rock band, not some new-age group)Pearls Before SwineYoung Black Teenagers [actually an early-1990s pseudo-hip-hop group of white guys in their 20s; "Tap The Bottle" was their biggest (only?) hit]Last but not least, there are at least three bands whose names contain an F-bomb: Holy F**k, The Exploding F**k Dolls, and plain, simple F**k .
Otokichi Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 Not exactly ridiculous, but a tad different: Dr. Sam & The Managed Care Blues Band. :guitar:
blind-fitter Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 This weekend I was listening to the band New Fast Automatic Daffodils, whom I criminally overlooked in my previous list. Good band, they were.
RyanTurtle Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 There's a band from around here called Maggot monkey and his rotting deer carcas
CanAm Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 My favourite is The Incredible Shrinking Dickies, a punk band out of L.A. (I believe)
blind-fitter Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 My favourite is The Incredible Shrinking Dickies, a punk band out of L.A. (I believe) Hmmmmm... The legendary U.S. punk band THE DICKIES (who made the top ten over here in 1979 with their cover of the "Banana Splits" theme song) released an album entitled "The Incredible Shrinking Dickies" way back when. It's cover showed the band-members surrounded by giant replicas of fairly small everyday objects (wine glass, etc) and one of them is impaled by a giant pencil, if memory serves. I wonder if this is to whom you are referring. If not, then this other band has been a bit cheeky in their choice of name, I reckon...
johnnyguitar Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 'Pukkalips Now'....geddit? Definitely my fave stupid band name....formed from the relics of the redoubtable 'Sniff This' (a play on the transiently famous other band 'Take That')who were, in their turn, derived, in the main, from ex-members of 'Swine Before Pearls' (not to be confused with numerous bands calle Pearls Before Swine...which is altogether less funny and more cliched) who actually contained several members of the 'never to be forgotten' 'Lost Chords'...well, I wont forget them anyway
blind-fitter Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 'Pukkalips Now'....geddit? Definitely my fave stupid band name....formed from the relics of the redoubtable 'Sniff This' (a play on the transiently famous other band 'Take That')who were, in their turn, derived, in the main, from ex-members of 'Swine Before Pearls' (not to be confused with numerous bands calle Pearls Before Swine...which is altogether less funny and more cliched) who actually contained several members of the 'never to be forgotten' 'Lost Chords'...well, I wont forget them anyway Don't know about "ridiculous", but these have to be some of the crappest band-names you ever heard, surely?
johnnyguitar Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 Are you saying, in your usual oblique way, that 'Sniff This' was a good name?
blind-fitter Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 Are you saying, in your usual oblique way, that 'Sniff This' was a good name? By far the best of a bad bunch, mate, (as it's more than just a bad pun). Does my opinion matter anyway?
johnnyguitar Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 So, your old muckers 'Nerve Rack'...where's that stand in the pantheon of shite names then? Also...was it one word or two? I followed them for years and never quite got the hang of it...mind you...I am a bit thick (and long too....fnarr, fnarr)
blind-fitter Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 So, your old muckers 'Nerve Rack'...where's that stand in the pantheon of shite names then? "On the outside, looking in". Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr, later of Sebadoh) said it was a "cool name". Come to think of it, I never heard anyone speak disparagingly of the name "Nerve Rack". What's your problem with it? Incidentally, it's two words, not one, as would be obvious if you looked at any of their album sleeves, CD sleeve, tape covers, etc. It does appear (erroneously) as a one-word name on the cover of a Fudge Tunnel single, whose B-side is a cover version of the Rack's "Rottweilers".
johnnyguitar Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 I think you should note that my question was...well, a question, what with having a question mark after it 'n'all. I was merely enquiring as to (at the risk of repeating myself) where you felt the name Nerve Rack stood in the pantheon of shite names? I'm still none the wiser, although apparently Lou thinks it's cool...and if Lou thinks its cool then its cool with me
Earth-Angel Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 I think Nerve Rack is neither here nor there. It's just a name, much like Spinal Tap but spelt differently Quite unrelated to the thread's title, I discovered one of my favourite illustrators through Sebadoh, Mr Derek Hess.
blind-fitter Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 (edited) And, at the risk of repeating myself, I answered your question about where I think "Nerve Rack" stands in "the pantheon of shite names", by replying "On the outside- looking in", meaning "not shite, therefore not in the pantheon, etc, etc.". What's up, johnny? Am I too subtle for ya? Edited January 8, 2006 by Guest
johnnyguitar Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 oooooooh! (said in a sort of increasingly high pitched 'get you' kind of way)... any votes for 'Dr.Strangely Strange' ? Gary Moore played for them once or twice....odd hippy band...great name
