MindCrime Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Post any ideas you may have for the monthly specials. One I thought of is a PTT choice, where each person nominates two songs that were featured on their PTT that hasn't made the regular 10 yet.
skybluesky Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I like that idea, and would like to suggest Billy Joel Elton John
MindCrime Posted August 20, 2010 Author Report Posted August 20, 2010 I think all artists should have a "petition" to see how many people would be willing to vote. Each 10 needs at least 10-12 minimum voters to really work.
Lucky Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) Thanks Kenne .... I was waiting for the PTT's to be done so that we wouldn't have so many things "stuck". And that's a great idea as well. I may as well post the ideas that the team has come up with so far, so y'all can see what we've got. We'll choose the theme randomly each month .... obviously the "Best Of's" are a popular idea. Maybe we'll alternate those with other themes. Anyway, here's what we've got so far: Classic Rock (obviously not the first choice lol) Indie/alternative/grunge (are these the same or seperate?) Instrumentals One hit wonders (been done once) Metal 60's pop/rock & 60's R&B (could be further broken down to Motown/Stax etc, or as girl groups etc..) Acoustic Country (including country rock/ alt country/roots/folk rock) Punk Psychedelic Comedy Disco Delta (or any early to widen the category) Blues By subject: Summer songs Cruisin songs Vacation (get away songs or about places) songs Back to school (songs about learning, teaching/schooling not necessarily literally) Class of ? (songs from the year you graduated hs) Power ballads Political/protest/rebellion Songwriters Covers (including ps idea of noms consisting of 1 original/1 cover for each) Songs from your birth year Guilty Pleasures (incorporates Steel's Songs You Are Embarrassed You Like) Movie Themes Sad/Emotional Songs (songs that make you want to drive your car into a wall, lol) Songs You Can't Stand (we did this once long ago, and it almost got vicious ... but it was fun) Live Songs Best ofs: Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Who, Floyd, Eagles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Queen, Elton John, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, U2, * See Rocky's post below for more "best of" ideas We'll edit further ideas in. Let us know what you think of these (yay or nay), and keep them coming. Edited August 21, 2010 by Guest
MindCrime Posted August 20, 2010 Author Report Posted August 20, 2010 They're all fine with me, some harder than others.
Uncle Joe Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I like all of those ideas. Make it happen, captain.
pinkstones Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Some artists I would like to see have a special: 1. Pink Floyd 2. Led Zeppelin 3. Elton John 4. Eagles 5. Billy Joel 6. Bruce Springsteen 7. U2 8. Madonna 9. The Supremes 10. Stevie Wonder Topics I would like to see made into specials: 1. Summer/seasonal songs 2. Protest/anti-war songs 3. Singer-songwriters 4. Covers (where your two songs are the original and the cover of your choosing) 5. Motown 6. One-hit wonders 7. Disco songs 8. Movie themes 9. Guilty pleasures 10. Foreign language songs
skybluesky Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Some artists I would like to see have a special: 3. Elton John 5. Billy Joel Another person wants these aside from me. They must be done. 8. Madonna That one may not get any takers other than me and my SF ball and chain, but I'm totally up for a Madonna ten. Topics I would like to see made into specials: 4. Covers (where your two songs are the original and the cover of your choosing) I am all about the Original/Cover theme. I make Original/Cover CDs a lot. I can't believe I didn't think of that idea.
edna Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I agree with everything you say. Except for Phil Collins... wait... did anybody mention Phil Collins?
Steel2Velvet Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I thought an intriguing TT would be "Songs You Are Embarrassed You Like," following the 2 nominations format. That way we can see if others like the songs we felt too self-conscious to mention. A very expose type TT.

RonJonSurfer Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Top Ten Songs that make you want to drive your car into a wall. These are songs that are so sad, emotional or pained that you take on the mood of the artist when they wrote or recorded the song. Believe it not I've had this list for years and put it on a tape/CD for the car. I haven't run into a wall yet, so I might need more suggestions from the group. Example: Have You Ever Loved a Woman - Clapton
chutzpah Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) Top Ten Songs that make you want to drive your car into a wall. Example: Have You Ever Loved a Woman - Clapton Huh? I think that's a great song :guitar: Maybe a song like YMCA or Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? How about everyone nominating 2 songs that they don't like?(not hate)or hate (I really don't agree with the word hate)I'm sure theirs a few that everyone would agree upon And I do sort of like my car (cars and walls don't mix) Edited August 20, 2010 by Guest forgot about my car

These aren't bad songs; these are great songs that suck you into the depths of despair that the artist feels. Clapton has many (Bell Bottom Blues...even Layla)...it may not even be the lyrics, it may be the guitar playing, etc....something that just intoxicates you with the music and makes you feel what the artist felt. I love the song "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and you can hear the pain Clapton is going through "having stolen Patti from George Harrison" even though he didn't write the song, he covers it with true emotion.
chutzpah Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I agree, but,Why not,The Allman Brothers? Grateful Dead?(or JGB?) Jefferson Airplane (and Hot Tuna or Starship?) I mean,it's ok with me but,I'm not sure if it's fair with people who have never heard of some of these bands (a few) And the seasonal stuff But,whatever you guys (and girls) want to do is ok with me

chutzpah Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 it's cool Ron, I just thought you'd pick a song like "Lay Down Sally" I've hit some fences over that one But, I think everyone could pick a few (and explain) about your suggestions

RockyRaccoon Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I like all the suggestions so far, though I don't know about a Supremes top ten. But maybe that's just me. Other artist suggestions: Elvis Costello Bob Dylan (I don'd know if someone already mentioned him) Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Heart Allman Brothers Grateful Dead (I don't know how many Deadheads reside here, but perhaps we could even do a "Top Ten Live Grateful Dead Songs?") Metallica (if anyone's feeling like metal) The Beach Boys Black Sabbath (maybe?) Blue Oyster Cult Chicago Rush Moody Blues CCR David Bowie The Doors ELO Eric Clapton (with or without his bands) Fleetwood Mac Genesis (Don't hurt me Sammy!) James Taylor Jimi Hendrix The Kinks Kiss Leonard Cohen Dire Straits Zappa (including Mothers Of Invention?) Neil Young Crosby Stills and Nash (and Young on a few songs) Paul Simon Simon & Garfunkel The Police Queen R.E.M (maybe?) Red Hot Chili Peppers Santana Van Halen Van Morrison Yes Perhaps a solo Beatles one? Either we could do Paul, John, George and Ringo separately or perhaps one top ten that is "Top Ten Solo Beatles Songs" We could also maybe do a "Top Ten Live Songs" Or perhaps a "Top Ten Delta Blues Era Songs" like Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson etc. Just a few thoughts.
pinkstones Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I love so much that you have made comprehensive top ten lists for the top tens. It appeals to my sense of organization. I'm OCD like that, I suppose. LOL
MindCrime Posted August 20, 2010 Author Report Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) Perhaps a solo Beatles one? MindCrime Posted August 20, 2010 Author Report Posted August 20, 2010 There's gotta be a minimum of like 20 songs already in the 10 by an artist to qualify. Artists who don't have any songs in the ten already or just a few, won't work out or get much support (e.g. Zappa, Rush, L.Cohen, etc.)
TheLizard Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I don't know about the Supremes by themselves, but a 60's girl-group special would be interesting.
Steel2Velvet Posted August 21, 2010 Report Posted August 21, 2010 I love so much that you have made comprehensive top ten lists for the top tens. It appeals to my sense of organization. Coulda been alphabetized
