Farin
umm, is this thing on? *gigantic screeching feedback noise* I guess it is... "ahem" Ladies and Gentlemen, SFF is proud to present to you today after more than 8 months... the 27th issue of the Songfactors' Choice: Personal Top Tens and with that, I give you The Incomparable, The One, The Only, Levis without whom this all would just not have been possible! *standing ovations* and here are her NOMINATIONS Achilles' Heel – Toploader It was just a freak chance that I managed to catch the video for this on TV one day. I didn't expect to see/hear it ever again and I was right. I committed the details to memory but - being new to the whole downloading business - it was several months (maybe a year?) till I finally got it. Bad Days - The Charlatans Off their free download album which didn't get much hype from what I saw. I like that... It's a great album, and I wouldn't want everyone in the world to have a copy. Black - Pearl Jam Stop! Stop whatever you are doing! Stop everything! Just... Stop! For this song. Beginning to end. No distractions. Stop. Black Metallic - Catherine Wheel Lyrics don't make much sense, but with a melody like that, who cares? Busy Bee - Ugly Kid Joe The song reminds me of when I was people-watching from my room instead of studying during exams. busybee watch the world go by... Checkered Floor - Silversun Pickups Once I start listening to them, I can't stop. I have Silversun Pickups listening sprees. Chromium - The Church First song I heard by them. The good ol’ days when Pandora actually liked me. I used a line as my signature for a while - neo-maniac, in the cul-de-sac. Cool, innit? Counting Blue Cars – Dishwalla But I love how innocent this song is. We count only blue cars... skip the cracks on the street and ask many questions... like children often do Cover Me - Candlebox I had this dream where the Beatles were sitting in a circle (a la Ticket to Ride) and John Lennon played the opening chords of this song. I woke up and it was my earworm for the day. A nice one though. Cut Your Hair - Pavement Batman and Scott both describe it as the most perfect pop song. It's also my theme song. The same lines featured as an intro to the last two books I read - one on alternative 90s music and one on Britpop: Music scene is crazy. Bands start up... each and every day. I saw another one just the other day: A *special* new band Deeply Dippy - Right Said Fred They're playing in the swimming pool! Deeply dippy about those Spanish eyes... Sierra smile... Legs that go on for miiiiles and miiiiles! I loved this video when it was out For Tomorrow - Blur The story behind the song is almost as romantically English as the song itself. Gel - Collective Soul They're one of the reasons why I have this thing for long, messy hair Hey - Blind Mr. Jones I am very, very lucky to have got to hear this song. If anyone from Blind Mr. Jones comes across this little snippet of text, I would like to give them a huge thank you for having existed. Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms Ah the carefree, grunginess of the 90s tomorrow we can drive around this town, let the cops chase us around... the past is gone but something might be found to take its place I Feel You - Depeche Mode You know, the rest of the album is nowhere near as good as this one song. And, as is often the case, the video makes me all 90s-nostalgic. Pity he cut his hair. I Wanna Be Adored - The Stone Roses Heard the opening chords and went to my UK music guru telling him they sounded like something I'd like. Received a truckload of material by them and turns out I was right. I Will Still Be Laughing - Soul Asylum First Soul Asylum song I heard wasn't Runaway Train, it was this. One of those songs that I found so very oddly appealing when I heard it. I'll Take The Rain - REM The song and video together make you really, really sad, and for no concrete reason. We cling to this; and claim the best... if this is what you're offering, I'll take the rain Into Your Arms - Lemonheads Evan Dando is one of my perfect hair examples. I love this video and this song. I considered changing it since we already had it last week, but no - this is my favourite little Lemonheads ditty. Jane Says - Jane's Addiction Is a sad little song. Jane says she's never been in love, no she don't know what it is... Only knows when someone wants her. "I want 'em if they want me. I only know they want me." Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space - Spiritualized Intense is an understatement. It's nearly supernatural All I want in life's a little bit of love to take the pain away Lonely Soul – UNKLE (Feat. Richard Ashcroft) Powerful song, this one. God knows you, lonely souls Maybe Tomorrow - Stereophonics I don't even know how I know this song, I just know I like it. I submitted its lyrics for the quote box. Midlife Crisis - Faith No More I had to force myself to stop listening to this one when I got it. I don't usually like listening to songs on repeat but I couldn't get enough. Gad, I'm so hardcore. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm - Crash Test Dummies When I first discovered how song downloads work, there was no doubt in my head that this was the very first song I had to have. I love it lots - as evidenced by my ceaseless nominating of it in the TTs My Friends - Red Hot Chili Peppers I LIKE One Hot Minute what is your problem? Sure it's ironic my favourite RHCP song doesn't have Mr. Frusciante, but that doesn't un chili-fy it Nasty Side, The - The Reegs This one's got about 4 lines of song in 6 minutes. And you still wish it never ends. No Rain (Ripped Away Version) - Blind Melon No Rain is really a painfully sad song set to a happy melody. Listen to the Ripped Away version and you hear how it's meant to be. "And don't you know that it rips my life away?" A lot of people prefer the first version, but I think it just pales compared to this. Only Shallow - My Bloody Valentine The day I got Loveless, I played this song some three or four times in the course of the evening. The next day I woke up with a crick in my neck Pearl - Chapterhouse This has all the elements of a typical shoegaze track - cloudy vocals with indiscernible lyrics blurring into distorted guitars. My favourite genre ever. Pets - Porno For Pyros Interesting tune, true lyrics - my friend says we're like the dinosaurs... And here we are, doing ourselves in, much faster than they ever did Right Here, Right Now - Jesus Jones Written at the turn of the decade when the world was changing and you wonder if anyone realised it. This is my 90s song. Right here, right now, there is no other place I wanna be Scorpio Rising - Death In Vegas If I don't go crazy, I lose my miiiiind. Liam's voice is perfect. Sleep - The Dandy Warhols Second time I heard this song I was in a little shop in Melbourne and couldn't place it. I didn't buy anything from there but before leaving asked the guy behind the counter what album was playing. The word 'Dandy' barely escaped his mouth before I went 'that's IT!' Song For The Lovers, A - Richard Ashcroft Dude appears on my list thrice. I really like him. And this is the first solo song of his I heard and also his best, imo. Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand - Primitive Radio Gods One of those songs that 'had me at hello' so to speak. Features a brilliantly used BB King sample. Another signature came from here: will money pay for all the days I've lived awake but half asleep? Stay Together - Suede Criticised for being overly abstract and intense and metaphorical when Elastica, Blur and Oasis were all about simplicity. Some find the lyrics and music pretentious, but I think they work. Step Into My World - Hurricane #1 I just nominated this last week, and this forces you to hear it again. I've been playing it on repeat for the past 2 weeks. Andy Bell's second band in between Ride and Oasis. Lovely little song. Step On - Happy Mondays The whistling, the voice, the keys and most importantly you're twistin' my melon, man! Tattva - Kula Shaker Well we need a KS song here, don't we? This is the one I had in mind when I went and bought K. Tom's Diner (DNA Remix) - Suzanne Vega Funny childhood story about this one... I used to honestly believe my youngest aunt sang this song. Realising she wasn't Suzanne Vega was a bit of a disappointment Two Princes - Spin Doctors You can't help smiling as you sing it Underneath The Sky - Oasis The thing with them is... They don't discriminate between B-sides and singles. Matter of fact, their B-sides are pretty marvelous. I think this is one of Noel's best compositions and one of Liam's best vocals. He lives his life in a suitcase, it belongs to a friend of a friend Waking Up - Elastica Story of my life - waking up and getting up has never been easy... make a cup of tea and put a record on What I Am - Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians This song is to me the audio equivalent of a comforter and hot chocolate in winter. Wide Open Space – Mansun I don't think there's a single song by this band I don't like. This is the first one I heard and the one that made me get their debut. I listened to it at least once every day for a couple of weeks. You Know You're Right - Nirvana I owe this song almost everything. It came out when I was 15 and the Nirvana album I subsequently bought was my most ambitious musical purchase ever at the time. Your Woman - White Town Another one of my 90s soundtracks. If you don't recognise this song, you slept through the last decade. This is Music - Verve Let's use my favourite band to sum things up. Here is the mp3 playlist. It was very painful to make because I had to keep interrupting my songs as I put it together. The ones I couldn't find (and the ones with nice videos) are youtubed. Most of these songs had me at the first listen, so even though they might be new to you, I hope you hear what I do when I listen to them. now, doesn't that look like an interesting list? I sure think so and if you do too, then VOTE AWAY NOW!! (and write a comment or so while you're at it )
The Seeker
I'll skip this one, alright? Alright? Voting on my OWN list would've been easier

Tenacious_Peaches
I suppose expertise in the area of tea making isn't exactly cooking, is it?
Levis
I call it that, but most of the world disagrees They don't count sandwiches either
miamisammy29
Sandwiches may not be considered "cooking", per se, but a great one does take some degree of culinary expertise.

Lucky
* On an unrelated and totally random sidenote, I watch a reality show called Top Chef. There is a contestant named Radhika whom I love, so I now associate Levis with cooking. Me too! Since we've only seen the briefest of photos of Radhi, in my mind chickie, you have become a six foot Parminder Nagra (from ER) with lovely hair, who now cooks like crazy. I can't wait to vote in this Top Ten!
