Songs used by political candidates

Recommended Posts

What do the songs that candidates use at their campaign events say about them? I'd like to find out, so I'm going to see if the campaigns will tell me what songs are of particular interest to their candidates.

Do any of you know what songs they've been using on the campaign trail? I believe Hillary has been using "American Girl."

What do we think of these songs, and what songs would be appropriate?

:elvis:

Hilary Clinton has also been using the Commodores' "Brick House"

Makes sense.

The clothes she wears, her sexy ways,

Make an old man wish for younger days

She knows she's built and knows how to please

Sure enough to knock a man to his knees...

Uh, riiiiiight. :stars:

I feel candidates using songs is fine as long as the artist is cool with them using the song, and most times the artist is backing that canidate. Does it make me any more impressed with the candidate? God no! They have a campaign song, so what...concentrate on the issues at hand please, your pick of song shouldn't get you more votes. And the song should fit the candidate. And if Hillary is using American Girl, oh please stop!! Elton John's "The Bitch is Back" would be a better fit.

At the 2000 Democratic convention, when Tipper Gore was introduced to the delegates, the song "Turn The Beat Around" was played, alluding to her days as a percussionist. Hard to picture Tipper behind a drum set, but I guess that was the case.

I remember a cover of the Kinks song Better Things was used in the 2004 remake of the movie The Manchurian Candidate for the convention scenes.

I remember because I love that song.

You Can Call Me Al ~ Paul Simon

Al Gore used this while he was running for Vice President in 1992. Simon has played at various Democratic fund raisers.

didn't know that either

I wondered how long it would take them to usurp Heart's Barracuda as a theme for VP candidate Sarah Palin (that is her nickname).

And the song was blasting during the balloon drop celebration at tonight's Republican convention finale.

one of my fave candidate song moments was when GWB used Petty's 'Won't Back Down' during the whole 'recount' debacle

Petty took away his rights super fast, and wound up performing outside Gore's house.

awesome.

I noted for the partying at the Democratic convention they were playing The Trammps' Disco Inferno. A rousing upbeat tune, to be sure, but does the "Burn, Baby, Burn" chorus carry the ideal image?

So, on a kinda related note, watching democrats dance was kinda really really embarassing.... but then I got to see a stadium of republicans 'dancing'.....

Have you ever seen a more highly concentrated group of people struggling to clap on beat?

Gretchen Peters told me she believes it was Reagan who used "Born In The USA" for his campaign trail mantra. Go figure.

He got into trouble for using that song without Bruce's permission.
