skybluesky
Does any one use Spyware Doctor or Norton Security Scan? Do I need both of them, since Norton also checks for spyware? Are there any other better, free anti spyware downloads available?
The Seeker
I used Spyware Doctor once, it's supposed to be quite good I think... but then it started to crash everything on start-up almost every single time up to the point at which I had to reboot my laptop four or five times until it finally worked, every day... had to uninstall it in Safe Mode. But until then, it worked very well.

Farin
the best free ones I know are Spybot and Ad-Aware having one programm that satisfies you should be enough though
skybluesky
Did you have it set to do a scan at start up Fin? {I don't.}
Kevin
As well , if you buy a new ( or fairly new ) Mac , it'll throw all that crap out like dirty shorts into the laundry basket - never a mix-up !
The Seeker
No, nothing... took me ages to figure out what was causing those problems too because once everything froze, I couldn't do a thing but manually reboot my laptop. I still don;t know what was wrong...

skybluesky
Thanks for the input. I'll try spyware doctor for a while, but if it crashes my computer, I'll just switch to something else.
Uncle Joe
I've been using LavaSoft's AdAware for years and find it to be quite effective in finding and destroying spyware, especially in combination with Spybot. Here are the free download sites: AdAware Spybot Lately I've used Norton's regular sypware filter with good success.
Viaene
I use AdAware and Spybot too. Together with AVG antivirus I'm perfectly safe without any complaints. It's a luxury compared to Norton products

Farin
spyware isn't the same as virus (viruses? viri?) and even a normal PC user with a good antivirus software and common sense doesn't really have to fear much

Farin
Is one better for "viri ?" no, these aren't used against viri () at all - you need an anti-virus programm for that they're against spy- or malware, eg tracking cookies, changes in the registry and stuff like that
