PSYCHOcatholic
Anti-war songs! Songs about Peace in General. Songs written during the 60's of course during Vietnam Conflict. Im not sure if there were songs about WW2 or WW1. Name some songs that are kinda anti war or very protest like. I cant help but think of one song when i think peace in a time of war. Louis Armstrongs - What a Wonderful World. In fact...they dont even have to be Anti-war. they can be songs about peace and harmony like Age of Aquarius! Otokichi
OK, here's one that was used in a movie: "One Tin Soldier" performed by Coven Movie: "The Legend of Billy Jack" Then there's Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" where antiwar lyrics alternate with the traditional song. Irish and Scots-Irish immigrants brought "Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier," which could be seen as an antiwar or war song depending on the context. "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream," associated with Pete Seeger/The Weavers has a definite anti-military bend to it. "Ain't Gonna Study War No More" is yet another folk song with definite ideas about peace vs. war. Finally, for those who can remember something about the 1960's there's Country Joe & The Fish with "The FISH Cheer," which was featured in the movie "Woodstock," and it isn't F*I*S*H that's begin talked about. :guitar:

bluesboy
... Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men, Uncle Sam needs your help again. He's got himself in a terrible jam Way down yonder in Vietnam So put down your books and pick up a gun, We're gonna have a whole lotta fun. And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam; And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why, Whoopee! we're all gonna die. Well, come on generals, let's move fast; Your big chance has come at last. Gotta go out and get those reds — The only good commie is the one who's dead And you know that peace can only be won When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come. And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam; And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why Whoopee! we're all gonna die. Huh! Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow, Why man, this is war au-go-go. There's plenty good money to be made By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade, Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb, They drop it on the Viet Cong. And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam. And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why Whoopee! we're all gonna die. Well, come on mothers throughout the land, Pack your boys off to Vietnam. Come on fathers, don't hesitate, Send 'em off before it's too late. Be the first one on your block To have your boy come home in a box. And it's one, two, three What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam. And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why, Whoopee! we're all gonna die. Country Joe - I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag - - - - ...All we are saying, is give peace a chance...
Otokichi
Waist Deep In The Big Muddy by Pete Seeger 1963, planned for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967 but CBS objected to the blacklisted Seeger making obvious references to the"big fool" in the White House, finally sung by Seeger on the Comedy Hour in 1968 as the finale in a medley of anti-war songs It was back in nineteen forty-two, I was a member of a good platoon. We were on maneuvers in-a Loozianna, One night by the light of the moon. The captain told us to ford a river, That's how it all begun. We were -- knee deep in the Big Muddy, But the big fool said to push on. The Sergeant said, "Sir, are you sure, This is the best way back to the base?" "Sergeant, go on! I forded this river 'Bout a mile above this place. It'll be a little soggy but just keep slogging. We'll soon be on dry ground." We were -- waist deep in the Big Muddy And the big fool said to push on. The Sergeant said, "Sir, with all this equipment No man will be able to swim." "Sergeant, don't be a Nervous Nellie," The Captain said to him. "All we need is a little determination; Men, follow me, I'll lead on." We were -- neck deep in the Big Muddy And the big fool said to push on. All at once, the moon clouded over, We heard a gurgling cry. A few seconds later, the captain's helmet Was all that floated by. The Sergeant said, "Turn around men! I'm in charge from now on." And we just made it out of the Big Muddy With the captain dead and gone. We stripped and dived and found his body Stuck in the old quicksand. I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper Than the place he'd once before been. Another stream had joined the Big Muddy 'Bout a half mile from where we'd gone. We were lucky to escape from the Big Muddy When the big fool said to push on. Well, I'm not going to point any moral; I'll leave that for yourself Maybe you're still walking, you're still talking You'd like to keep your health. But every time I read the papers That old feeling comes on; We're -- waist deep in the Big Muddy And the big fool says to push on. Waist deep in the Big Muddy And the big fool says to push on. Waist deep in the Big Muddy And the big fool says to push on. Waist deep! Neck deep! Soon even a Tall man'll be over his head, we're Waist deep in the Big Muddy! And the big fool says to push on! I didn't see that "Smothers Brothers" segment, but I came across the song some years later when a college radio station played it. :guitar:

Sweet Jane 61
Buffalo Springfield For What It's Worth Stephen Stills, 1966 There's something happening here What it is ain't exactly clear There's a man with a gun over there Telling me I got to beware I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down There's battle lines being drawn Nobody's right if everybody's wrong Young people speaking their minds Getting so much resistance from behind I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down What a field-day for the heat A thousand people in the street Singing songs and carrying signs Mostly say, hooray for our side It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Paranoia strikes deep Into your life it will creep It starts when you're always afraid You step out of line, the man come and take you away We better stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, now, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, children, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down
Sweet Jane 61
Peace On Earth U2 Album: All That You Can't Leave Behind Heaven on Earth, we need it now I'm sick of all of this hanging around Sick of sorrow, sick of the pain I'm sick of hearing again and again That there's gonna be peace on Earth Where I grew up there weren't many trees Where there was we'd tear them down And use them on our enemies They say that what you mock Will surely overtake you And you become a monster So the monster will not break you And it's already gone too far Who said that if you go in hard You won't get hurt? Jesus can you take the time To throw a drowning man a line Peace on Earth Tell the ones who hear no sound Whose sons are living in the ground Peace on Earth No whos or whys No one cries like a mother cries For peace on Earth She never got to say goodbye To see the color in his eyes Now he's in the dirt Peace on Earth They're reading names out over the radio All the folks the rest of us won't get to know Sean and Julia, Gareth and Ann and Breda Their lives are bigger than any big idea Jesus can you take the time To throw a drowning man a line Peace on Earth To tell the ones who hear no sound Whose sons are living in the ground Peace on Earth Jesus sing a song you wrote The words are sticking in my throat Peace on Earth Hear it every Christmas time But hope and history won't rhyme So what's it worth This peace on Earth Peace on Earth Peace on Earth Peace on Earth

Shawna
I read an interview with Micky Dolenz some years back where he said their songs "Take A Giant Step," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," "Last Train To Clarksville" and "Randy Scouse Git" were all meant to be war protest songs... Randy Scouse Git She's a wonderful lady And she's mine all mine And there doesn't seem a way That she won't come and lose my mind. It's too easy humming songs To a girl in yellow dress It's been a long time since the party And the room is in a mess. The four kings of E.M.I. Are sitting stately on the floor There are birds out on the sidewalk And a valet at the door. He reminds me of a penguin With few and plastered hair, There's talcum powder on the letter And the birthday boy is there. Why don't you cut your hair? Why don't you live up there? Why don't you do what I do, See what I feel when I care? Now they've darkened all the windows And the seats are naugh-a-hyde. I've been waiting for an hour, I can't find a place to hide. The being known as Wonder Girl Is speaking I believe. It's not easy tryin' to tell her That I shortly have to leave. Why don't you be like me? Why don't you stop and see? Why don't you hate who I hate, Kill who I kill to be free. [Progressive scat vocals] Why don't you cut your hair? Why don't you live up there? Why don't you do what I do, See what I feel when I care? Why don't you be like me? Why don't you stop and see? Why don't you hate who I hate, Kill who I kill to be free.

Shawna
and then there is another Roger tune with a great verse which says, "'General, General, I gotta ask it With my new uniform do I get a casket, and a one-way ticket, Or do you plan to bring me back home?' He said, 'Son, son, son that's a mighty good question. Ain't got your answer, just a suggestion, Join up, find out, hope you ain't accident prone. 'Cause even in the very best company, boy, we're always alone.'"
Otokichi
Some years ago, I ran across this Kate Bush song about the art of war...and the people left behind. "Army Dreamers" "B.F.P.O."* Army dreamers. "Mammy's hero." "B.F.P.O." "Mammy's hero." Our little army boy Is coming home from B.F.P.O. I've a bunch of purple flowers To decorate a mammy's hero. Mourning in the aerodrome, The weather warmer, he is colder. Four men in uniform To carry home my little soldier. "What could he do? Should have been a rock star." But he didn't have the money for a guitar. "What could he do? Should have been a politician." But he never had a proper education. "What could he do? Should have been a father." But he never even made it to his twenties. What a waste -- Army dreamers. Ooh, what a waste of Army dreamers. Tears o'er a tin box. Oh, Jesus Christ, he wasn't to know, Like a chicken with a fox, He couldn't win the war with ego. Give the kid the pick of pips, And give him all your stripes and ribbons. Now he's sitting in his hole, He might as well have buttons and bows. Ooh, what a waste of all that Army dreamers, Army dreamers, Army dreamers, oh... ("B.F.P.O.") Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum... Army dreamers. Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum... ("Mammy's hero.") ("B.F.P.O.") Army Dreamers. ("Mammy's hero.") ("B.F.P.O.") No harm heroes. ("Mammy's hero.") ("B.F.P.O.") Army dreamers. ("Mammy's hero.") ("B.F.P.O.") No harm heroes. * B.F.P.O. Jimmy1104
If you are looking for protest songs you need not go any further than Phil Ochs. He is arguably the leading protest and anti war musician of the sixties. I highly suggest you review his music. Even today his songs are relevant.
