OLD 55
Hi All ! I've been using 'iTunes' to organize my music. One of the things it does is to count the number of plays given each song. These are my 40 most played songs of this era to Saturday 15th October 2011. There's a few great Doo Wops there. I dedicate those to my friend Joe and wish him all the best with his health problems. 01. Sleep Walk 2:27 Santo & Johnny 02. Pretend 2:39 Carl Mann 03.Shout! Shout! OLD 55
Hi Phil, Sammy and edna. Great to hear from you. Cheers Zabadak. I'm just sticking to the guidelines of our original Oldies Top 40; around 1954 to 1963 pre-Beatles/English Invasion of the U.S. What is often referred to as the "Golden Age" of U.S. Pop/Doo Wop/ early Rock 'n' Roll. I believe we had the best of 'both worlds' here in Australia, as we grew up with both great U.S. and British Pop songs, as well as homegrown talent of course. Also our DJs were fairly adventurous in what they played - making some overseas songs "Australia Only" Hits. A good example is Tamoure - Bill Justis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IwmnTopT0A. It was #1 for 4 weeks here in 1963, and only 'bubbled under' at #101 in America. Here's what I've been listening to this week - to 22nd October 2011. I've discovered Carl Mann, who never had an Australian Hit. I like him ! 01.Pretend 2:39 Carl Mann 02.Sleep Walk 2:27 Santo & Johnny 03.Sally Go Round the Roses 3:16 04.Denise 1:59 Randy & the Rainbows 05.Memphis 2:44 Lonnie Mack 06.Mona Lisa 2:30 Carl Mann 07.Shout! OLD 55
Cheers night2day. Nice to meet and greet you. Yes, whilst The Beatles would be my #2 Artist/ Group behind Elvis, I still prefer the 'good old days' of Pop music. Of course, an individual's good old days usually depends on when he/she was born. How does a young'un like you know those songs ? And I hadn't noticed that all the songs were under 3 minutes this time Zabadak. I think Bob Dylan sent Jukebox operators broke with 'Like A Rolling Stone', the first song over 4 minutes that I can recall receiving regular AM airplay. OLD 55
Hi Dear Laurie. There were 32 nominations for the Top Ten that I didn't know last week. It would have been a bit of a stretch for me to listen and appreciate those in a few days. I just had a look at this week's nominations so far, and there's 4 I know already. If another 4 I know show up, I'll nominate and that'll be 10. BTW, I wonder how many songs you and others know from my 40 above. I'd be interested to find out ! I'm 70 y.o. and I know the 50s and 60s fairly well + most 70s and 80s (and some 90s)that were AM HIT SINGLES - not too many Album Cuts though. We couldn't afford Albums when I was a youngster, walking 10 miles to School - uphill both ways (Thanks Lucky) - to save bus fare, after rising at 4.30 a.m., milking the cows and rounding up the rest of the heard (heard of cows ?), and THEN repairing the 50 acre fence line where the kangaroos and emus had kicked holes in it the previous night. Then I'd have bread and dripping for breakfast, gather up my 3rd hand books and a large stick to kill all the snakes I'd encounter on the way - we hadn't heard of Conservation then - and trek to School. Then I'd have to come home after school and do more more chores. My Teacher Miss Raunch wasn't much help either. She'd keep me after School and make me do things - and if I didn't do them right, she'd make me do them again. (Thanks Rodney Dangerfield). Very tiring. But I still managed to listen to a bit of AM Music at night on our pedal driven (by me of course) radio. That's why I liked songs less than 3 minutes.
