I discovered three, for lack of a better word, really beautiful songs this week. No Ceiling is cheating a bit I guess since it's on the soundtrack of one of my favourite movies. (Coincidentally, that movie, Into The Wild, tells the true story of a guy who adopted the name Alexander Supertramp after reading a book by W. H. Davies... and that's where a certain other band I voted for got their name from too).

Well, for starters, I think the appeal of this site is primarily biased on "white" music and only 3 different genres/eras.

I'm not complaining about the Tens, or this site. It's just an observation. I wouldn't participate if I didn't like it.

but how could this ever change if nobody would 'force' us (or at least give us the opportunity to) listen to other stuff?

of course, not everyone would listen, and of those who do, not everybody will like it...

but for some it would be a greatly appreciated education measure :)

:P

I've thought about RonJon's idea before. I'm just not sure how to define that ten to make sure it is fair and nobody nominates popular songs/artists (obviously excluding songs that have made the top tens is a start, but that makes it like every other top ten). It would be best if we gave everyone a fair bit of time to listen to every song if we did a top ten that had all fairly obscure songs in it.

I guess it would be easiest if we just trusted people not to nominate Beatles/Stones etc, rather than imposing special rules.

I'd like to see it open to all artists. For example, The Beatles would get eliminated from contention because of their status on the TT. However, maybe somebody loves "You Know My Name, Look Up The Number". That song would never get a sniff if nominated on the regular TT.

The Beatles provide an easy example, but they have songs that are obscure too. I know we did the personal TT but that included many of the classics.

Anyway, since I'm making suggestions without planning to do any of the work...I'll shut up now.

OK, after this I'll shut up. Maybe we can have some fun with it. If somebody nominates a song that is too mainstream (let's not worry about the definition of "too mainstream") the nominator can be called out be anyone to defend their position.

I guess this version of the TT would take a long time to complete, but what's the rush?

Sounds like fun to me. If we're going to do something like this soon I will be holding off on my next weeks noms :D

I do agree tho that there are a lot of songs by popular artists that would never make a regular TT and unless your a hard core fan of a curtain artist most people would have never have heard the song.

For instance, "The Sage" by ELP I nominated this week. It got few votes as I knew it would and it's a beautiful song. The competition it has tho would of course eliminate any chance of it even coming close.

But I just wanted people to listen to it and I hope they did ;)
