NOMINATIONS 21st Century Schizoid Man – King Crimson And You And I – Yes April Sun In Cuba - Dragon Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Jet Beck’s Bolero – Jeff Beck Belfast Child – Simple Minds Better – Screaming Jets Bloody Well Right - Supertramp Champagne Supernova – Oasis Chemical Heart – Grinspoon Eagle Rock – Daddy Cool Evie Parts 1, 2 & 3 – The Wrights Part 1: mp3 Part 2: mp3 Part 3: mp3 Firth Of Fifth – Genesis Golf Girl – Caravan Govinda – Kula Shaker High Hopes – Pink Floyd Hocus Pocus - Focus Innuendo – Queen It’s Because I Love You – Masters Apprentices Khe Sanh – Cold Chisel Knights Of Cydonia - Muse Knots – Gentle Giant Legend Of A Mind – The Moody Blues Lighthouse – The Waifs Like Wow Wipeout – Hoodoo Gurus Love Your Way – Powderfinger Madman Running Through The Fields – Dantalian’s Chariot Man-Erg – Van Der Graaf Generator Millionen Legionen (Unplugged) – Die Fantastischen Vier Mind’s Eye - Wolfmother Minstrel In The Gallery - Jethro Tull Most People I Know (Think That I’m Crazy) – Billy Thorpe And The Aztecs Never Tear Us Apart – INXS No Rain – Blind Melon Nothing Else Matters – Metallica Nowhere Without You – Bob Evans Olsen Olsen – Sigur Rós One Word – Baby Animals Prisoner Of Society – The Living End Remedy – The Black Crowes Rhayader – Camel Rooster – Alice In Chains Run Runaway – Slade Supper's Ready – Genesis Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses The Dead Flag Blues – Godspeed You! Black Emperor The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin The Real Thing – Russell Morris Tom Sawyer – Rush Under The Milky Way – The Church IMPORTANT NOTES: I imagine some people will not have heard 10 songs from this list. If you don’t have the time to listen to the multitude of 6-minute plus songs on the list, you are excused. Don’t be put off the video for Rhayader because of its length – only the first two and a half minutes is actually the song I am nominating. For those who seek something with female vocals, the only songs on this list with female lead vocals are One Word and Lighthouse. Though there are also plenty of high pitched male vocals on the list (Jon Anderson, Thijs van Leer, Jimmy Barnes, Shannon Hoon, Jónsi Birgisson, Noddy Holder, Axl Rose, Robert Plant AND Geddy Lee – I doubt anyone else has that much castrato on their list). Note that I am considering Evie Parts 1, 2 & 3 (originally recorded by Stevie Wright – I would have nominated his version if I had audio/video) to be a single nomination, not three separate songs. Anyone who can work out who the lead singers of the three parts of Evie are will receive pie. Here’s a big clue: each of the three singers appear in their respective bands in other songs on my list. Finally, by reading this note, you are agreeing to listen to AND vote for Powderfinger and Cold Chisel. A Youtube Playlist for your listening pleasure. Furthermore, if you really, really want to tell Chris how much you like his list, you've to ask his permission, ok? VotevotevotevoteNOW!! Therefore... you are all expressly forbidden from showing any form of appreciation ... Chris, I´m sorry, I guess you´re a failure...we both are, in fact! Well, I know I am weird so it´s not strange that I´m still listening to your list - Camel right now... - while I already voted and write this... 1- 21st Century Schizoid Man – King Crimson 2- Golf Girl – Caravan 3- Beck’s Bolero – Jeff Beck 4- Man-Erg – Van Der Graaf Generator 5- Never Tear Us Apart – INXS 6- Legend Of A Mind – The Moody Blues 7- Hocus Pocus - Focus 8- Innuendo – Queen 9- Govinda – Kula Shaker 10- Prisoner Of Society – The Living End Another case of a list that needs a Top Twenty. Van Der Graaf are amazing... I didn´t know that song. I also like The Wrights a lot but no place for them in the list... ...now my husband is listening to Slade and The Church... he says "why didn´t you vote for these ones? They´re great songs!" c_s_1987
I've been waiting a long time for this, but it is really, really worth it to see people voting on a list consisting entirely of songs I love. I'm not surprised you liked Man-Erg, edna. The album it is from, Pawn Hearts, is my new avatar. That album really amazed me with how brilliant it is, quite similar in fact to my reaction to In The Court Of The Crimson King. I'm hoping one of the more obscure Australian songs will make the top ten, but after looking at the first few votes, I'm not holding my breath. Trying to imagine a cross between Cold Chisel and King Crimson, but it hurts... LBB I would love a cross between Cold Chisel and King Crimson. Apparently 70s-Oz-prog-rockers Sebastian Hardie are pretty good, but I haven't listened to anything by them yet. They are one of the bands on my "must check out" list. c_s_1987
Wow, lots of great Evie videos have been uploaded since I first created the youtube playlist. I've added the studio version of Evie Part 2 to the end of my playlist, as well as all three parts of the Stevie Wright original. There's also a live Stevie Wright version on YouTube from a popular Australian TV show called Hey Hey It's Saturday, but the studio version is dubbed over it. It probably wouldn't have been a very good live version anyway - I think Stevie was already pretty brain damaged from heroin abuse by then. LeeBB
Ahh, fantastic, thanks! Finally the original Evie on youtube!! (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=JMPmGbjW8mk) I'd say that Stevie Wright was very much the model for Bon Scott... not surprising, I guess. LeeBB
Okay, it was hard to leave out the heavy metal yodelling song, but I stuck with an all ANZAC list... 1. Evie Parts 1, 2 & 3 – The Wrights this is really for Steve Wrght's original... part ONE 2. Most People I Know (Think That I’m Crazy) - Billy Thorpe And The Aztecs incredible! 3. The Real Thing – Russell Morris 4. It’s Because I Love You – Masters Apprentices 5. Eagle Rock – Daddy Cool I've heard this song many thousands of times, but so what? 6. Under The Milky Way – The Church 7. Khe Sanh – Cold Chisel Not my fave Chisel by a long stretch, but probably the number one "oz-rock" classic 8. Never Tear Us Apart – INXS proof that Michael could really sing, plus one of my fave drum fills 9. April Sun In Cuba - Dragon interlopers in my all Oz list 10.Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Jet Sure, it's a rip-off, but it's a good rip-off LBBBbb Edited December 7, 2008 by Guest
c_s_1987
^ It is an all Australian list though. Dragon are Australian. So are Split Enz, Crowded House and every good band and artist that originated in New Zealand. They're Australian whether they like it or not.
