OK, new first dance idea

Recommended Posts

I had posted not long ago, asking for suggestions for a medieval or Renaissance-themed song for the first dance at my wedding next year. You guys had some great suggestions, and I've found a lot more new music. But I'm just not "feeling it" with most of the medieval songs, and since our wedding also has a castle theme, a fairytale theme, and an English theme (we're mixing things up a bit), I realized I could go in another direction.

So that said, does anyone have any suggestions for either love songs that mention castles a lot or any that make you think of London or old England?

Thanks again for all of your suggestions!

A couple of songs from the play, Camelot seem fitting.

There's the title song, Camelot and the lovely If Ever I Would Leave You.

If Ever I Would Leave You

Sir Lancelot (Robert Goulet)

If ever I would leave you

It wouldn't be in summer.

Seeing you in summer I never would go.

Your hair streaked with sun-light,

Your lips red as flame,

Your face witha lustre

that puts gold to shame!

But if I'd ever leave you,

It couldn't be in autumn.

How I'd leave in autumn I never will know.

I've seen how you sparkle

When fall nips the air.

I know you in autumn

And I must be there.

And could I leave you

running merrily through the snow?

Or on a wintry evening

when you catch the fire's glow?

If ever I would leave you,

How could it be in spring-time?

Knowing how in spring I'm bewitched by you so?

Oh, no! not in spring-time!

Summer, winter or fall!

No, never could I leave you at all!

Camelot

Arthur: (Richard Burton)

It's true! It's true! The crown has made it clear.

The climate must be perfect all the year.

A law was made a distant moon ago here:

July and August cannot be too hot.

And there's a legal limit to the snow here

In Camelot.

The winter is forbidden till December

And exits March the second on the dot.

By order, summer lingers through September

In Camelot.

Camelot! Camelot!

I know it sounds a bit bizarre,

But in Camelot, Camelot

That's how conditions are.

The rain may never fall till after sundown.

By eight, the morning fog must disappear.

In short, there's simply not

A more congenial spot

For happily-ever-aftering than here

In Camelot.

Camelot! Camelot!

I know it gives a person pause,

But in Camelot, Camelot

Those are the legal laws.

The snow may never slush upon the hillside.

By nine p.m. the moonlight must appear.

In short, there's simply not

A more congenial spot

For happily-ever-aftering than here

In Camelot.

That f*cking annoying Peter Cetera song from Karate Kid 2. Oh, apparently it's called "Glory of Love."

Fortress Around Your Heart by Sting, though may not be correctly themed for a wedding.

In keeping with the King Arthur Legend:

Guinevere by David Crosby

Guinnevere had green eyes

Like yours, mi'lady like yours

When she'd walk down

Through the garden

In the morning after it rained

Peacocks wandered aimlessly

Underneath an orange tree

Why can't she see me?

Guinnevere

Drew pentagrams

Like yours, mi'lady like yours

Late at night

When she thought

that no one was watching at all

She shall be free

As she turns her gaze

Down the slope

to the harbor where I lay

Anchored for a day

Guinnevere

Had golden hair

Like yours, mi'lady like yours

Streaming out when we'd ride

Through the warm wind down by the bay

Yesterday

Seagulls circle endlessly

I sing in silent harmony

We shall be free

Here's one from Sister Hazel, and it makes me think of old-timey knights, etc. The music itself is a little funky, but the words are heartfelt and he said he laid himself bare when he wrote this one... check out the Songfacts

Sword and Shield - Sister Hazel

Written by Ken Block

Just when the sky runs out of rain

Just when the sun runs out of light

Just when the earth is ill with pain

Just when your body is out of fight

I will be there

I will be the smallest piece in everything

And I would give my life before I break this promise to you

Melt in to me

Don't you want to be the ones that last forever

I'll be your everlasting

And enemies they take your will but they won't last forever

I'll be your sword and shield and

I'll be your sword

I'll be your shield

Just when the ocean starts to dry

Just when the air is sick with smoke

Just when the statues start to cry

And fallen angels they lay broken

I will be there

I will be the smallest piece in everything

And I would lose my life before I break this promise to you

Melt in to me

Don't you want to be the ones that last forever

I'll be your everlasting

And enemies they take your peace but they won't last forever

I'll be your sword and shield and

I'll be your sword

I'll be your shield

I'll be your gracious angel

I'll be your favorite stranger

I'll be the mortar holding your walls

I'll be your army

Just when the sky runs out of rain

Just when the sun runs out of light

Just when the earth is ill with pain

Just when your body is out of fight

I will be there

I will be the smallest piece in everything

And I would give my life before I break this promise to you

Melt in to me

Don't you want to be the ones that last forever

I'll be your everlasting

And enemies they take your peace but they wont last forever

I'll be your sword and shield and

I'll be your sword

I'll be your shield

I'll be your sword

I'll be your shield

I'll be your army

there is also a couple of really gorgeous renaissance-style songs by Loreena McKennitt that would fill the bill.

SAMAIN NIGHT

Words and music by Loreena McKennitt

When the moon on a cloud cast night

Hung above the tree tops' height

You sang me of some distant past

That made my heart beat strong and fast

Now I know I'm home at last

You offered me an eagle's wing

That to the sun I might soar and sing

And if I heard the owl's cry

Into the forest I would fly

And in its darkness find you by.

And so our love's not a simple thing

Nor our truths unwavering

But like the moon's pull on the tide

Our fingers touch, our hearts collide

I'll be a moonsbreath by your side.

Listen to song clip

THE MYSTIC'S DREAM

Words and music by Loreena McKennitt

A clouded dream on an earthly night

Hangs upon the crescent moon

A voiceless song in an ageless light

Sings at the coming dawn

Birds in flight are calling there

Where the heart moves the stones

It's there that my heart is calling

All for the love of you

A painting hangs on an ivy wall

Nestled in the emerald moss

The eyes declare a truce of trust

And then it draws me far away

Where deep in the desert twilight

Sand melts in pools of the sky

When darkness lays her crimson cloak

Your lamps will call me home

And so it's there my homage's due

Clutched by the still of the night

And now I feel you move

Every breath is full

So it's there my homage's due

Clutched by the still of the night

Even the distance feels so near

All for the love of you.

Listen to a song clip
