Kevin Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 That was horrific but not criminal. Agreed - and likely a species saver , as had we not known what those bombs could do , we may have launched them blindly in the Cold War .
MindCrime Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 It was a crime against humanity. Name something else you used to wear as a popular style, but never again. Flannel shirts in the early 90s when Grunge was in. Name something that you would only have the nerve to do if you saw somebody else around you doing it also.
Kevin Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 It was a crime against humanity. On the contrary : had we not seen what those puny nukes could do , we would've found out over some fickle debate over Hungary or somewhere with bigger ones ... The Japanese WERE NOT GOING TO SURRENDER . They had the populace prepared to meet your troops with bamboo spears - women and children included . National suicide was the new military policy , and thank god , the Emperor and his staff could see though that-finally . Estimates of G.I. deaths for the invasion of Japan were estimated at 1,000,000 ... you do do the math.
MindCrime Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 Is that your answer to something you would only do if you saw somebody else doing it first?
Kevin Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 No one is 'proud ' of the Atomic bombings , but they are hardly criminal - and sadly , lets Japan act the 'victim' of the war , which is not healthy for their psyche at all - and only pumps up the far right here , which , believe you me , is still very potent .
Kevin Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 "A new era is upon us. Even the lesson of victory itself brings with it profound concern, both for our future security and the survival of civilization. The destructiveness of the war potential, through progressive advances in scientific discovery, has in fact now reached a point which revises the traditional concepts of war. Men since the beginning of time have sought peace.... Military alliances, balances of power, leagues of nations, all in turn failed, leaving the only path to be by way of the crucible of war. We have had our last chance. If we do not now devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door. The problem basically is theological and involves a spiritual recrudescence and improvement of human character that will synchronize with our almost matchless advances in science, art, literature and all material and cultural development of the past two thousand years. It must be of the spirit if we are to save the flesh." - Gen. Douglas MacArthur on the Missouri , Sept . 1945
BlueAngel Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Taking the lives of innocent people, including babies isn't criminal? Strictly speaking by this definition every act of war perpetrated by any country that resulted in the death of members of the civilian population would be considered criminal. Though they probably should be, according to the generally accepted laws of armed conflict they are not. According to estimates the number of innocent non-military lives lost in WWII alone are around 40 million as a result of bombing, deportation, famine, disease, acts of genocide and other war crimes. The atomic bombings of Japan while dreadful certainly, are not any less horrible then, say, the Nanking Massacre (played down still by the Japanese) committed by the Imperial Japanese Army where hundreds of thousands of civilians of all ages were hunted down and murdered while tens of thousands of women young and old were raped, often brutally mutilated then killed. As Kevin mentioned the Japanese were not going to give up. Their cities had been firebombed for months before Hiroshima (which also a military target of note), and they had been warned of the consequences of further refusal to surrender so those who rejected the ultimatum could be seen as just as responsible for what followed. War is a crime against humanity and those people who actions and ambitions leave no other option then for it to occur are the real criminals. It can never be fought purely between armies, navies or air forces there will always be some collateral damage, and if the wars of the past cannot teach us the value of preventing ones in the future, more people will die needlessly, caught up in someone else's fight. Name something that you would only have the nerve to do if you saw somebody else around you doing it also. Skydive Name something you feel stongly about that you end up ranting about every time its brought up in discussion. (For example see my above rambling. )
