blind-fitter Posted May 25, 2010 Report Posted May 25, 2010 On Friday, I chanced upon a vinyl LP by The Shamen entitled "Strange Day Dreams"; originally released in 1988, it's a collection of their early material from when they were a psychedelic indie-rock band,i.e. before they discovered and incorporated hip-hop beats, acid-house, rave stylings, etc. A cracking bargain for the paltry sum of £1. Today, I finally managed to spend the £10 Jumbo Records voucher given to me by my work colleague as a gesture of gratitude, when I had given her American husband a lift up from London to Leeds about a month ago. (After visiting his folks in the States, he had been stranded there an extra week due to the Icelandic volcano eruption, so arrived back in London a week later than originally planned, with no ticket back to Leeds.) The albums I bought in Jumbo were: "Holiday" - The Magnetic Fields A bit of a shot in the dark: I really like The Magnetic Fields "69 Love Songs", but it is a triple album, so I don't know whether another Magnetic Fields album is what I really need. Listened to quite a bit of it on my way back to work. Sounds quite nice. Kind of like what would happen if Scott Walker got together with The Jesus And Mary Chain with the intention of making camp but classy synth-pop. "Kaleidoscope" - Siouxsie & The Banshees This one of my favourite Banshees albums; I've had it for donkey's years on vinyl, but it'll be nice to finally have it on CD, so I can listen to it whenever I like.

Farin Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 or did you just take your laptop with you and ripped them there?
Viaene Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 ^That would save you time and distance, plus the cd remains available for other costumers, win-win!
TheLizard Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 I actually took them all out. The look on the librarian's face when I plopped that stack of CDs on the counter was priceless.
Ombre Vivante Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 If you ever want to find tons of music that you can simply burn to your computer, I suggest visiting the local library: Forty Licks - The Rolling Stones Some Girls - The Rolling Stones Bringing It All Back Home - Bob Dylan The Very Best of Jackie Wilson Harvest Moon - Neil Young Feelin' Alright: The Very Best of Traffic The Best of 1990-2000 - U2 The All-Time Greatest Hits of Roy Orbison The Best That I Could Do 1978-1988 - John Mellencamp Just Push Play - Aerosmith Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath (Dio! ) Led Zeppelin II - Led Zeppelin The Very Best of Wilson Pickett Greatest Hits - Al Green The Ultimate Collection - The Four Tops Anthology - Ray Charles 20 All-Time Greatest Hits - James Brown King of the Delta Blues - Robert Johnson Me and Mr. Johnson - Eric Clapton I just buy them so that I may access to them whenever I want
TheLizard Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 I can access them whenever I want. That's what a computer with the capability to burn CDs is for. All that music is now just a mouse click away.
Ombre Vivante Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 But I'd have to buy the blank cds, the cd cases, special paper for the cover and labels, colour ink for the cover and labels, a large external hard-drive (500GB or more), not to mention if my computer or hard-drive crashes, then I'd be f***ed. I drop $300 on a set of cds, cassettes, or lps, and I'm done
TheLizard Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Ah, well life is much easier when you're not obsessive compulsive.
Ombre Vivante Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 And cheaper. I coulda probably saved another $10K this year if it weren't for my penchant for buying up music, videos, and books
RockyRaccoon Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Or you could just do it all illegally. But I don't know anything about that
Ombre Vivante Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 You know that if you go into a store with the intent to steal, some police will push for burglary charges - a felony; I've seen it done. A felony could affect my legal status here in the US. This hobby costs money, but it ain't gonna break the bank
MindCrime Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 I think he meant downloading through Peer to Peer network, but I could be wrong.
MindCrime Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 But I'd have to buy the blank cds, the cd cases, special paper for the cover and labels, colour ink for the cover and labels... A simple marker works, I dont usually bother printing out labels or any of that other stuff.
Ombre Vivante Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Ah. I do use torrents and such, but that's only when the album is outta print and if the music is at least 392kbps (or in wav or flac format)
RockyRaccoon Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Agreed. P2P is the way to go! Not literally stealing. That's illegal!
