80's or 90's music

Recommended Posts

Well, if you are looking for songs that are "definitive" of each decade, then maybe for the '80's:

Tainted Love - Soft Cell

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

Orange Crush - REM (was that '80's?)

Definitely a lot of English stuff--Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, to name a few

For the '90's, definitely some grunge:

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Evenflow or Alive - Pearl Jam

and then we had the "Lillith Fair" years, so I'd pick some Sarah McLachlan and You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrissette for starters

Maybe some other members out there can give you more varied choices. I'm mostly a mainstream radio girl

I would definetely get some styx and rush eventhough their music might have come out in the late 70s. Songs like renegade, come sail away, and tom sawyer are must haves if your looking for epic cockrock oh and journey's "separate ways" is unforgetable

Major Tom - Peter Shilling

Take on me - A-ha

Here i go Again - Whitesnake

Legs - ZZ top

Doest really matter - Platinum Blonde

The break up song - The Greg Kin Band

I love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett

I think you should go for Beat it instead of Billy Jean, everyone has Billy Jean. Beat it was by far way better

Thats my say on some 80s songs

I have a CD called

"Best of the 80s"

It has:

All she wants to do is dance

Electric avenue

sweet dreams

Karma chamelion

Material Girl

addicted to love

Time after Time

Wake me up before you go-go

Walk like an egiptian

Mony mony

Faith

Sexual healing

Billy Jean

Saving all my love for you

Little red corvette

Whats love got to do with it*

I just called to say I love you

every Breath you take

Against all odds

and Just the two of us

* Radio is playing Tina Turner as I type

Now, granted, "best of" is a generic term

and some of these I hated even then,

but hope it helps. =:P

I have some ideas for 80s music:

Got My Mind Set on You (George Harrison)

Walking on Sunshine - not sure who it's by. Any help out there?

I Just Called to Say I Love You (Stevie Wonder)

Boys of Summer (Don Henley)

Centerfold (J Geils Band)

Glory Days (Bruce Springsteen)

Bette Davis Eyes (Kim Carnes)

All I Need Is a Miracle (Mike + The Mechanics)

Invisible Touch (Genesis)

Van Halen (Jump)

Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears)

Take on Me (A-Ha)

We Are the World - the ultimate 80s anthem!

You can't go wrong with Chicago, The Police, Madonna & Cyndi Lauper. Also, there are some good songs from movie soundtracks (Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Top Gun and Dirty Dancing to name a few).

Have fun!

I'd suggest making separate CDs for the 80's and the 90's.

For the 80's CD, I would definitely include:

1. SoftCell - Tainted Love

2. Eurithmics - Sweet Dreams

3. A-ha - Take On Me

4. Spandau Ballet - Gold

5. Depeche Mode - Little 15

6. Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me (I hate this song, but it's so typical for the 80s)

7. Duran Duran - Wild Boys

8. Billy Idol - Sweet Sixteen (I'm not sure if this isn't early 90's)

9. T'Pau - China In Your Hand

10. The Smiths - Hand In Glove

11. R.E.M. - The One I Love

12. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

13. Cinderella - Heartbreak Station (again, is this 80's?)

14. Metallica - One

15. U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

16. Tina Turner - The Best

17. David Bowie - Let's Dance

16. Tina Turner - The Best

17. David Bowie - Let's Dance

This is a good list. It's difficult making a mix CD of a decade because you'll eventually run into problems of what to include. Generally, you'll find that most commercial compilations don't mix genres of music. You won't see Metallica with the likes of Soft Cell... you probably won't even see Cinderella with Metallica in most cases either. Then we have alterno bands like The Smiths with top 40 acts like Tina Turner. They're all good, but in the mix of things it will sound... uneven? Haha. Just saw Hi-Fidelity and I'm gettin' into my mode here :jester:

Taking a cue from most of Endymion's picks, I'd go with:

"Hunting High And Low" by A-Ha

"The Day Before You Came" by ABBA

"Ashes To Ashes" by David Bowie

"Shake The Disease (Extended)" by Depeche Mode

"Here Comes The Rain Again" by The Eurythmics

"Nightporter" by Japan

"Paradise" by NewOrder

"You Got Lucky" by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers

"Wrapped Around Your Finger" by The Police

"The Ghost In You" by The Psychedelic Furs

"Oscillate Wildly" by The Smiths

"True" by Spandau Ballet

"More Than This" by Roxy Music

"It's My Life" by Talk Talk

"Vienna" by Ultravox

"New Year's Day (album version)" by U2

"The Damned Don't Cry" by Visage

In this instance, I chose the more synthetic sounds of the 80s (Tom Petty is surprisingly SynthPop in this case) and put in a couple of alterno acts in for filler. An album that includes Metallica would also include bands like Maiden, Motorhead, Megadeth, Priest, Ozzy, and such. I dunno if Cinderella would fit in this line-up either. It would probably go in a CD that included Def Leppard, Bon Jovi (ugh!), Poison, Motley Crue, RATT, etc.
