every now and then, you just NEED a few songs to unwind at the end of the day. whether you had a hectic and chaotic day, restless and unbearable, or exhilerating and perfect.

as of late, i am in dire need songs like this. they can be from any genre, artist, language, and era; they can be about love, closure, despair, resolution or other.

and again, thanks in advance.

Nothing like jazz samba for kicking back, relaxing and getting romantic, too.

I especially like the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim...performed by just about anyone. Vocals, instrumentals, mixed...whatever. Some songs I'd recommend? Wave, Tide, Desifinado, Agua De Beber, Felicitade, Ginji, Corcovado, Girl From Ipanima, etc.

Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 also provide some great jazz samba. Like A Lover, Fool On The Hill, Chelsea Morning, etc., etc.

Then there's light classical music. Smooth jazz. Sound effects like ocean waves, rain forests, thunder storms, etc.

"Across the universe" is really the most relaxing Beatles song... it even includes a mantra (Jai Guru Dei va Om)

Speaking of... David Sylvian is also good for that kind of sound. There's a song called "Voices Raised In Welcome, Hands Held In Prayer" as well as "Temple Of Dawn" that are all Zen-like :beatnik:

oooooooooh can't believe i forgot it!! on jeff's posthumous album 'sketches (for my sweetheart the drunk)' track 8 is called 'new year's prayer' - it's amazing and has a strong qawwali influence (he was a big fan of nusrat fateh ali khan ). it's gorgeous. also track 10 'you & i' is a practically a cappella song which is very relaxing and dreamlike. (other beautiful mellow songs on disc 1 of that album: everybody here wants you, opened once and morning theft)

Uncle Joe nailed it for me. If you can't relax to a good bossa nova or jazz samba album you need further medication. Get yourself one of the Astrud Gilberto compilation cd's it will melt you into a puddle.

Since I list myself as Jazzcat I'll stick to the jazz genre and leave some of the rock stuff for you other folks but here are a few other suggestions.

Gary Burton and Chick Corea - Crystal Silence

Jane Monheit - Never Never Land

Chet Baker - My Funny Valentine (Pacific Jazz compilation)

Bill Evans - Moonbeams

Stan Getz - lots of his I'll say Best of Two Worlds lp

George Shearing - Try the Capitol "Best of: vol 2"

Marian McPartland - On 52nd Street

Milt Jackson - Sunflower

Wes Montgomery - Road Song

Count Basie - April in Paris

Keith Jarrett - not for every taste but try "the Koln Concert"
