ecceccecc Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 I'd like to suggest one more category: songs that mention other songs. That's why: there's an Oasis song, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory", that mentions "Tomorrow Never Knows" (Beatles) on the lyrics. That kind of thing, I mean. Is it possible to create this new category?
Zabadak Posted December 12, 2014 Report Posted December 12, 2014 Why not just start the topic in the Fun & Games forum?
Carl Posted December 12, 2014 Report Posted December 12, 2014 This is a good idea. Let me see if we can round up enough songs for that category.
Brad_M Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 The example above wouldn't fit the category. The song "Morning Glory" only contains the words "tomorrow never knows", but it isn't referring to the Beatles' song directly. The line for that lyric is "Tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon". The line before that says "Another sunny afternoon, walking to the sound of my favourite tune", but the singer doesn't say what song that is. I don't know if there is many at all. I've only heard a couple of songs that do, but I can't recall which ones they were off hand.
Rayzor Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 I know of a couple where a band/member is mentioned but I don't recall any songs that reference other songs. Tough categories either way. That's just me, though.
Shawna Posted December 15, 2014 Report Posted December 15, 2014 I can think of two immediately off the top of my head. Probably many more, given time.
Zabadak Posted December 16, 2014 Report Posted December 16, 2014 "All You Need Is Love" mentions "Yesterday" and "She Loves You"...
Shawna Posted December 18, 2014 Report Posted December 18, 2014 "These Days" by Rascall Flatts "'Norma Jean,' ain't that the song we'd sing in the car." Referencing "Norma Jean Riley" by Diamond Rio. "Happened on a Saturday Night" by Jason Michael Carroll "So she left Bobby standin' all alone and empty handed, as the band played 'Why Lady Why'" references the song "Why Lady Why" by Alabama. "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock "Singing Sweet home Alabama all summer long" references "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd "Old Alabama" by Brad Paisley "A little 'Dixieland Delight'" "A little 'Why Lady Why'" "And it's 'Love in the First Degree'" references three different songs by Alabama.

_Laurie_ Posted December 18, 2014 Report Posted December 18, 2014 Rock And Roll Heaven ~ Righteous Brothers [Chorus] If you believe in forever, Then life is just a one-night stand. If there's a rock and roll heaven, Well you know they've got a hell of a band, band, band. Jimmy gave us rainbows, And Janis took a piece of our hearts, And Otis brought us all to the dock of a bay. Sing a song to light my fire, Remember Jim that way, They've all found another place, another place to play. [Chorus] Remember bad bad Leroy Brown, Hey Jimmy touched us with that song. Time won't change a friend we came to know. And Bobby gave us Mack the Knife, Well look out, he's back in town. They'll all be there together When they meet in one big show. [Chorus] There's a spotlight waiting No matter who you are Cause everybody's got a song to sing, Everyone's a star (Everybody's got to be a star).

Brad_M Posted December 30, 2014 Report Posted December 30, 2014 Wow! There's more than I thought. I'm glad you brought it up, ECC. to everyone finding them and posting them here. I'm really liking this thread and looking forward to seeing what else is out there. Keep 'em comin'. I think I'm gonna have to start listening to the lyrics a little closer and maybe keep a post-it note pad in the car to write a song down if I hear one.

Northernpopquizzer Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 An even better category is finding an artist who mentions another of their own songs in the lyrics. For example 'California Dreamin' is mentioned in Creeque Alley by Mamas & the Papas Take Me Bak 'Ome in Skweeze Me Pleeze me by Slade California Girls in Do it Again by Beach Boys Spinnin Around in In Your Eyes by Kylie The Young Ones in Saviours Day by Cliff Richard Chinatown in Killer on the Loose by Thin Lizzy My Generation in 5.15 by The Who
