Farin Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Laurie beat me to 1984, but I also love this one: (3 Feet High and Rising - De La Soul) Smooth and funky, with samples you could never clear today. Key tracks: Say No Go Eye Know Me Myself and I The Magic Number awesome also good call on "Green"
skybluesky Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 I've already chosen my ten, and eight of them I owned on cassette and listened to many many many times on my boom box, the over sized i-pod of the 80s. I would still like to see some one nominate John Mellencamp, Culture Club, Lionel Richie, and Cyndi Lauper. Not to dredge up an old argument, but Purple Rain is a soundtrack, but the songs were written specifically for the movie and recorded by one artist (as opposed to the 70s point of contention, Saturday Night Fever). Does Purple Rain count as a valid nomination?
Dappled Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits 1. "So Far Away" 3:59 2. "Money for Nothing (Knopfler, Sting)" 7:04 3. "Walk of Life" 4:12 4. MindCrime Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Does Purple Rain count as a valid nomination? I don't see why it wouldn't... All songs performed by same artist, despite being a soundtrack (if that is even a ruling) All songs were originally from this release, unlike SNF, where half the songs were from another album prior to release.
skybluesky Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 That was my point exactly. I was asking because I want to vote for it, so I hope it is valid.
edna Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 All songs were originally from this release, unlike SNF, where half the songs were from another album prior to release. In that case maybe my "Stop making Sense" nomination wouldn't be valid? Because the songs are all from other albums... In that case, let me know and I'll nominate another album...
Farin Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 I don't know if it's valid or not, but Remain in Light is a great album too
Lucky Posted August 26, 2010 Author Report Posted August 26, 2010 While I dislike posting lists for these things I checked & DDD states (same as before) that compilation albums aren't eligible. But, soundtracks (as before) in general (and Purple Rain in particular) are. That seems totally reasonable to me.
skybluesky Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 In that case maybe my "Stop making Sense" nomination wouldn't be valid? Because the songs are all from other albums... In that case, let me know and I'll nominate another album... I think it counts because it is the soundtrack to a concert film and all the material is Talking Heads original material. But I don't make the rules.
MindCrime Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 If Stop Making Sense is eligible then I think Eagles Greatest Hits should've been too for the 70's.
Lucky Posted August 27, 2010 Author Report Posted August 27, 2010 This time I don't agree. Eagles Their Greatest Hits is one of my all time favorite albums and one of the top selling albums of all time. But there are some distinctions between these two albums, which clearly made the Eagles' ineligible. Stop Making Sense is a live 1984 album by Talking Heads, the soundtrack to the film of the same name. Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) is the fifth album by the American rock band the Eagles, a compilation of singles released on Asylum Records in 1976. I'm sorry. It's the live part that does it for me. We made the same decision for the 70's, and we should try to be consistent.
MindCrime Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I didn't even know it's a live album, yeah that's a different case then.
pinkstones Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 I can't wait for the 90s thread -- I've already got one pick and no it's not PF.
skybluesky Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - Public Enemy (1988) You may want the world to think you are a straight up gangsta thug (or worse, Flava Flav), but I know your true 80s passion is Duran Duran. You have hurt me by turning your back on yourself.
Tenacious_Peaches Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 I am a riddle wrapped in a mystery wrapped in an enigma, sugar foot.
skybluesky Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 I thought you were a pork chop wrapped in ham wrapped in bacon. Now I'm sad.
Lea Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 (edited) Edited August 29, 2010 by Guest Not laughing cause your sad Shannon. But Damn if the pair of you don't make me LMFAO
MindCrime Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 I know your true 80s passion is Duran Duran I considered nominating Rio, but I figured it wouldn't get much support anyways and already had my 2.
Lucky Posted August 29, 2010 Author Report Posted August 29, 2010 We'll probably start the voting in a day or two ... get your noms in, if you haven't already.
Tenacious_Peaches Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 I thought you were a pork chop wrapped in ham wrapped in bacon. Now I'm sad. Don't be sad, my love. Like Chaka sang, I'm every porcine...it's all in me.
Viaene Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 "Teen Age Riot" "Silver Rocket" "The Sprawl" "'Cross the Breeze" "Eric's Trip" "Total Trash" "Hey Joni" "Providence" "Candle" "Rain King" "Kissability" Trilogy: A) "The Wonder" "Hyperstation" Z) "Eliminator Jr."
