OLD 55
O.K. Rules to a Minimum ! * Just U.S. Charted Pop Singles of the era 1950(generally) but not after 1963. * No Album Only Tracks or Uncharted B Sides. * IMPORTANT ! Part C - other songs you'd like to see in the Top 40 - you can go along with others to support songs you like, i.e. we don't need 5 different songs from each person. * U.S. Chart Links as a guideline HERE . .................................................. HERE'S MY VOTES for Top 40 #2. A. Existing Songs Plus. I like these ! Send 'em up the Chart. +5. Rock Around The Clock / Bill Haley & His Comets. First heard it in "Blackboard Jungle" when I was 14. Had to fib about my age to get into the Theatre. 54 years later I still love it. +4. Heartbreak Hotel / Elvis Presley. Can't begin to describe the effect this song had on me when I first heard it. Unbelievable. +3. Big Bad John / Jimmy Dean. This song makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He gave his life to save the other Miners. +2. I Can't Stop Loving You / Ray Charles. One of the most beautiful songs of all time, written and originally recorded by Don Gibson. +1. The Battle Of New Orleans / Johnny Horton. A catchy little 'War Of Indepence' ditty. .................................................. B. Existing Songs Minus. I don't care much for these. Send 'em down. -5. Young Love / Tab Hunter. Pathetic when compared to the Sonny James version. Just because he was a 'Teen Idol' didn't mean Tab could sing. And if the girls had known he 'batted for the other side'... -4. Mack The Knife / Bobby Darin. Probably not many will agree with me, but it just never made my day. Great arrangement though. -3. Tossin' And Turnin' / Bobby Lewis. How did it top the U.S. Charts for 7 weeks ? -2. Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu / Domenico Modugno. I like Dean Martin's English version. -1. Hound Dog / Elvis Presley. There's a lot better Elvis songs than it in my book. .................................................. C. Songs not there that I'd like to see in the Top 40. +5. Runaway / Del Shannon (#1 Billboard, 1961) Ah! That Musitron ! +4. Sleep Walk - Santo and Johnny (#1 Billboard, 1959) Greatest Instrumental of the Rock Era. +3. Long Tall Sally / Little Richard (#6 Billboard, 1956) Another song in the I can't believe I'm hearing thiscategory. +2. Since I Don't Have You / Skyliners (#12 Billboard,1959) What a song ! What a Doo-Wop Group. Pretty fly for white guys. +1. Whatever Will Be Will Be (Que Sera, Sera) / Doris Day (Billboard #2, 1956) From the Hitchcock Movie "The Man Who Knew Too Much". Became a world wide best selling single. Her best song since 'Sentimental Journey'. ................................................ Viaene
I like this game, but I don't have too much knowledge and time, so my question is: Is it ok to vote occasionally? I can assume occasional voters disburb the bilboard simulation concept thing.

Judo
Hello Old55, Thanks a mil for the invitation. Feels good to be back. When does voting close? I've been away from the threads for so long - gone a bit rusty. Need time to compile my "should be on the chart" list. Cheers! Judo
OLD 55
John ! It's great to see you back here. I saw some current Times in different Zones displayed on one of the pages when I logged in yesterday - what a great idea - but I can't find it today. Well, it's approaching 12.00 P.M. Sunday, Australian Eastern Daylight Savings time now, so I'd like to post the Top 40 around this time each week. Maybe everyone could work out their Times from this Post ? Hi Viaene ! Nice to see you too. I'd like this to be a fairly casual thread. Just drop by and vote anytime you feel like it. Also, if anyone wants to put some Trivia or Pics relevant to the era, that would be great ! I know Joe (Hi Mate) has lots of good stuff. Thanks Lucky, Laurie and Joe for voting already. You did it great ! I agree that it's a good idea to put a YouTube or Sound link for each of the 'new' songs too. :guitar:

Lucky
I saw some current Times in different Zones displayed on one of the pages when I logged in yesterday - what a great idea - but I can't find it today. Darryl (and anyone else that may or may not have noticed) the Worldwide Time Zone Clocks are only visible if you are on the "Forum Index" tab at the top of the page. Convienient, since I think we have almost all possible zones represented at SF.
OLD 55
Thanks so much Lucky ! That clears that up for me. So I'll use the 'Melbourne' Zone. I'll just mention again also that the cutoff date is songs that charted in the U.S. in 1963 ! This is so we don't run in to the 'British Invasion' which began in 1964, and to my mind created a whole new (great) era, but quite different to the one we're looking at. And remember ... we don't have to all nominate 5 new songs not nominated by others. If I hadn't gone first this time I would have probably nominated a couple of newies and supported three other great songs put forward by others. I'll vote later next week. I might go along with 5 others I like !
