rockstar-101
I don't know if anyone has seen the site by Rolling Stone Magazine with their picks for the forty songs that changed the world. Personally, I don't think their list is really great and I'm glad that they are giving the fans a chance to speak out and change it. RonJonSurfer
I guess I need some justification about how any Britney Spears song changed the world.
Batman
well, hardly any of the songs on that list actually changed the world
edna
There are lots of "important" songs and songs I like... now that Britney Spears song is also a mystery to me...
skybluesky
I agree with- I Want to Hold Your Hand Anarchy in the U.K. Rappers Delight as for Dylan, I would have went with "The Times, They Are a-Changin'" Maybe Britney changed the world by ushering in an era of stupidity the likes of which the world may never recover from. Batman
well, i'd say most songs on the list at least changed the music world. only a few changed the whole world, and that's still questionable.
bazooka
[smallest] bazooka's $.02 worth[/smallest] : Changing the World is a tall order. Many of these songs affected the popular music landscape a bit. Most achieved ‘flavor of the times’ status due to some innovative production, video [smallest] and/or[/smallest] marketing technique, or ‘new’ artists that brought something unique. (They even could have included The Twist . by Chubby Checker) The Beatles ([smallest]especially John Lennon[/smallest]) probably come closest to attaining the position of ‘historical figures’. I think they had a more profound effect on trends and attitudes than Elvis or Sinatra could ever claim. But even that is fading in time, and I Want To Hold Your Hand. or Strawberry Fields Forever never really had anything to with it. Whoever dreamed up this list must have considered A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall . a superior Bob Dylan song (which it is), but, in terms of changing worlds (culturally or musically) both the better recognized Blowing In The Wind and electrified folk Like A Rolling Stone ought to out rank it. I'd love to Change the World But I don't know what to do So I'll leave it up to you ~ Ten Years After
Sweet Jane 61
I can't say that I think a song changed the world, but an artist can change the music world and yes a song can send a message. As for this list, I agree with 1-24.
rockstar-101
I wish they were more specific on what them meant by changing the world!
Sweet Jane 61
I think they should've went back a little farther, what about the blues? Most music has its roots from the blues. Sometimes Rolling Stone Magazine makes no sense. I like the mag better back in the beginning and a little into the 80's. It's a commercial sellout mag now, in my opinion. TheLizard
I subscribe to it, and I think it's pretty good. Probably not as good as it once was, but better than any other music magazine I've read. Their lists do generally suck, though.
Sweet Jane 61
When I really got into music around the age of 13 I was reading RS and Creem, and I loved Creem! It was an awesome magazine and it didn't seem to change the way RS did over the years. I miss that magazine. I know RonJon posted this link before but I can't remember where, check out this for some cool music history. Creem
RonJonSurfer
Sweet Jane is right about Creem...a fantastic magazine that hated the pompous world of RS. Circus was another of that era....both had heavy Bowie coverage....'nuff said.
Batman
rolling stone is way too full of itself. it seems like every other issue is a tribute to itself.
Sweet Jane 61
Exactly, the night DJ had the new issue last night and I glanced through it and I was like what a waste of paper and money. I don't know what happened to Jann Wenner, when he started RS back in '67 I think it was the magazine was all about rock and roll and everything connected to it, but now it is all flash and trash! TheLizard
The main two articles of the last issue were on The Police and the global warming crisis. The Police rock and the global warming crisis is very important, especially since most of the people who read the magazine are probably around my age. How's that flash and trash? Sweet Jane 61
Global warming is important to most everyone, doesn't have an age limit. But RS over the past 20 years had changed, and for those of us that grew up on it back in the day see the changes and miss what the magazine was all about when it first began. TheLizard
Understandable, I guess I'm lucky I have nothing to compare it to, so I can't really complain... The Police and global warming, eh? Sweet Jane 61
Understandable, I guess I'm lucky I have nothing to compare it to, so I can't really complain... That is true, but take a look at it sometime, really look at RS. There is a lot that could be left out and replaced with more interesting music articles. I just hate the fluff stuff, know what I mean?
RonJonSurfer
Is Melody Maker still around (I guess i could Google it) but I enjoyed reading MM when I was younger...
TheLizard
Yeah, I usually skip the tabloid-y crap. If there's a better music magazine out there, unfortunately I haven't found it. The other music magazines around now tend to specialize in a certain genre of music, and that's lame.
Sweet Jane 61
the night time DJ is a huge music fan I mean he knows labels, recording dates, all that stuff and he reads Paste and says it is decent and better than RS... TheLizard
Well, they do seem less self-satisfied than RS. I'll have to go find an issue and see what it's like.
