Rolling stone is crap. I personnaly am completely disgusted with ANY Rolling Stone Magazine opinion. I was recently reading another post and someone said he picked That's All Right as the first Rock n' Roll album because Rolling Stone said it was. a very wise member named PinkFloyd1973 put it this way:

ROLLING STONE is to MUSIC as

NATIONAL ENQUIRER is to the SCIENTIFIC WORLD.

You dont think Robert Johnson should be in there! Do you know who he is? I dont wanna get to preaching but every bluesmamn I bet you has covered one of his songs. I bet you think you dont even know one of his songs but you do maybe 3 or four(he sold his soul at the crossroads come on thats freaking awesome). Who did they leave out? I just dont think you know who these guys are. A great guitarist isn't just someone that can play super fast licks. Robert Johnson influenced alot of people with the way he played now there might be people that copied his style and can maybe play it better but they are just duplicating this man.

Seriously though who did they leave out?

Who do you think should have been left out?

In my opinion Kurt Cobain and the Metallica guy should be dropped down 10 maybe 15 notches.

I see some people they left of but hell nobody is going to be happy with a list ogf guitarist because we all have different tastes. BUT ROBERT JOHNSON COME ON DUDE[RESPECT]

As a matter of fact I have a record of Robert Johnson and I am 1 years old so I suppose you could consider me a fan. And I have a few B.B. King's so don't tell me I don't like the blues. I am sorry.

To the rest of the list:

JACK WHITE 17????I have picked up a guitar seriously about 10 times and I can play two of his songs. at least most of them. SO either I'm the next Hendrix, or they are not tough.

Curt Cobain 12???? ..... no comment.....maybe he could trade spots with Eddie Van Halen

JOHNNY RAMONE 16??? I love the Ramones but come on.

George Harrison 21??? Again I love the Beatles but not that much

WAKE UP DUDE DO YOU LISTEN TO ANY """GUITAR"""???

A list of the 100 greatest whatevers is now a standard feature of all music magazines when they find themselves short of features to fill their pages , so Rolling Stone is no more guilty than the rest.

At best, they might encourage you to listen to people that you aren't familiar with. At worst, you'll just ignore them. But dont get so worked up over it; these lists aren't SUPPOSED to be a definitive guide, they're just a bunch of opinions and nothing more. Of course, its interesting to read them and disagree with them...why do you think they get published in the first place?... but never take them as gospel.

Just like any list comprised of favourite picks, there's always gonna be those left out or those which the reader feels shouldn't be there.

It's like this, a person could write their favourite 100 guitarists and another person reading it might like every single selection out of the 100. But reality dictates that humans have a relentless preoccupation with thinking that they know what's better than the other guy. So, even if a perfect list was made, no one would agree except the person who made the perfect list for themself. For this I'm thankful.

No two people think exactly the same. If it ever were to happen, life as we know it would cease to exist because individuality would be a thing of the past. The individual must believe in what is right as well as believe that others believe they know what is right. When it comes to the sound which we call music, nothing is wrong except to the one thinking it.

Relish the fact that we each have our own minds, for one day, our minds will not be our own.

The one thing that really strikes me as weird about this list is that it includes musicians who play VERY different types of music...so how can you possibly try to compare them against each other?

For instance, what sort of criteria can be used to argue that folk guitarists like Bert Jansch and John Fahey are 'better' or 'worse' than, say, Steve Howe or Richie Blackmore?? It can't be done.

No I dont listen to guitar I listen to music because guitar players arent bands. I know you said you like the Ramones but maybe you dont understand why they are important if it wasn't for them we would still be playing 20 minute solos. I have playing the guitar for 15 years so I knoow my guitar sorry to have to drop that but I think it was called out.

It's a solid list, they named most of the great guitarists, but in general I never really agree with Rolling Stones list making, their Top albums & top song lists were bad enough, & if you think Rolling Stone is the absolute worst, try Spin's opinions of the greatest.

17 Jack White of the White Stripes

Uhm?... how about ... NO

46 Les Paul

70 Eddie Van Halen

82 David Gilmour

They have some excellent guitarists underrated

Joe Perry is not better than Eddie Van Halen

Most of what was listed before Gilmour is false IMO

They fail to give any credit to the Eagles

I could nit-pick on this list all day long, if I had the time

In my opinion ... the Metallica guy should be dropped down 10 maybe 15 notches.

Early-day Kirk Hammett is talented enough for his placing, but I guess that's all a reflection of my opinion, not to conflict with yours.

Only the first four man, Clapton basically copied Chuck Berry.

I'm a sucker for lists. I read all the best guitarists/bands lists, watched the 100 best comedians on comedy central, 51 greatest smartasses, but when I'm done, I realize, wait, why do I care? All lists are trying to appeal to mainstream, because that makes more money. and believe me, they aren't doing it for the love of sharing their opinions, its for the money. They could have just put in a list "100 best selling guitarists" and just left it like that.

Its a shame that Rolling Stone runs its magazine the way it does. Millions of people read it, and they should use their power to promote underground or less well known or respected bands, but still stay with the mainstream, so they don't lose readers.

Usually I watch them on TV, or even in list format on websites, I'm not so interested in what ranking they produce, I just like to see the whole compilation of the greatest. As long as they include all of the good on there, it's usually worthwhile to watch or read.
