skybluesky
Even though the story is of a broken romance, Dire Straits' "Romeo & Juliet" is beautifully heartbreaking.
MarcM
You beat me to it, Shannon! Hand in Hand by Dire Straits is good, too. Again, not a happy love song, but beautiful. The sky is crying the streets are full of tears Rain come down wash away my fears And all this writing on the wall Oh I can read between the lines Rain come down forgive this dirty town Rain come down and give this dirty town A drink of water a drink of wine If I been hard on you I never chose to be I never wanted no one else I tried my best to be somebody you'd be close to Hand in hand like lovers are supposed to As you'd sleep I'd think my heart would break in two I'd kiss your cheek I'd stop myself from waking you But in the dark you'd speak my name You'd say baby what's wrong ? Oh ? Here I am baby I'm coming back for more I'm like a wave that's got to roll into the shore Yes and if my loves in vain how come my love is so strong ? If I been hard on you I never chose to be I never wanted no one else I tried my best to be somebody you'd be close to Hand in hand like lovers are supposed to Now you and me go parallel together and apart And you keep your perfect distance and it's tearing at my heart Did you never feel the distance You never tried to cross no line 'CAUSE it's another dirty river and another dirty scar And I don't know who's kissing you and I don't know where you are So far from home don't you think of me sometime If I been hard on you I never chose to be I never wanted no one else I tried my best to be somebody you'd be close to Hand in hand like lovers are supposed to(2x) Sky is crying see the streets are full of tears Rain coming down to wash away my fears And all this writing on the wall Oh I can read between the lines Love Aint For Keepin' by The Who is a nice little song too.... Blue Fish
What about "two out of three ain't bad" by MeatLoaf? Here's the Lyrics: Baby we can talk all night But that ain’t getting us nowhere I told you everything I possibly can There’s nothing left inside of here And maybe you can cry all night But that’ll never change the way that I feel The snow is really piling up outside I wish you wouldn’t make me leave here I poured it on and I poured it out I tried to show you just how much I care I’m tired of words and I’m too hoarse to shout But you’ve been cold to me so long I’m crying icicles instead of tears And all I can do is keep on telling you I want you I need you But -- there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you Now don’t be sad ’cause two out of three ain’t bad Now don’t be sad ’cause two out of three ain’t bad You’ll never find your gold on a sandy beach You’ll never drill for oil on a city street I know you’re looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks But there ain’t no coupe de ville hiding at the bottom of a cracker jack box I can’t lie I can’t tell you that I’m something I’m not No matter how I try I’ll never be able To give you something Something that I just haven’t got There’s only one girl that I will ever love And that was so many years ago And though I know I’ll never get her out of my heart She never loved me back Ooh I know I remember how she left me on a stormy night She kissed me and got out of our bed And though I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door She packed her bags and turned right away And she kept on telling me She kept on telling me She kept on telling me I want you I need you But there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you Now don’t be sad ’cause two out of three ain’t bad I want you I need you But there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you Now don’t be sad ’cause two out of three ain’t bad Don’t be sad ’cause two out of three ain’t bad Baby we can talk all night But that ain’t getting us nowhere

umpire
"Taxi" by Harry Chapin is a great story song: It was raining hard in 'Frisco, I needed one more fare to make my night. A lady up ahead waved to flag me down, She got in at the light. "Oh, where you going to, my lady blue, It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain." She just looked out the window, and said "Sixteen Parkside Lane." Something about her was familiar I could swear I'd seen her face before, But she said, "I'm sure you're mistaken" And she didn't say anything more. It took a while, but she looked in the mirror, And she glanced at the license for my name. A smile seemed to come to her slowly, It was a sad smile, just the same. And she said, "How are you Harry?" I said, "How are you Sue? Through the too many miles and the too little smiles I still remember you." It was somewhere in a fairy tale, I used to take her home in my car. We learned about love in the back of the Dodge, The lesson hadn't gone too far. You see, she was gonna be an actress, And I was gonna learn to fly. She took off to find the footlights, And I took off to find the sky. Oh, I've got something inside me, To drive a princess blind. There's a wild man, wizard, He's hiding in me, illuminating my mind. Oh, I've got something inside me, Not what my life's about, Cause I've been letting my outside tide me, Over 'till my time, runs out. Baby's so high that she's skying, Yes she's flying, afraid to fall. I'll tell you why baby's crying, Cause she's dying, aren't we all. There was not much more for us to talk about, Whatever we had once was gone. So I turned my cab into the driveway, Past the gate and the fine trimmed lawns. And she said, "We must get together," But I knew it'd never be arranged. And she handed me twenty dollars, For a two fifty fare, she said "Harry, keep the change." Well, another man might have been angry, And another man might have been hurt, But another man never would have let her go... I stashed the bill in my shirt. And she walked away in silence, It's strange, how you never know, But we'd both gotten what we'd asked for, Such a long, long time ago. You see, she was gonna be an actress And I was gonna learn to fly. She took off to find the footlights, And I took off for the sky. And here, she's acting happy, Inside her handsome home. And me, I'm flying in my taxi, Taking tips, and getting stoned, I go flying so high, when I'm stoned.
Jimmy1104
Hey Ump....when I first saw the subject of this thread the first song that popped into my mind was also by Harry Chapin. The song is titled "I Wanna Learn A Love Song". It is a story of a married woman who wants to learn a love song and slowly falls in love with the guy teaching her. I Wanna Learn a Love Song by Harry Chapin I come fresh from the street, fast on my feet, kind a lean and lazy; not much meat on my bones, and a whole lot alone, and more than a little bit crazy. The old six string was all I had to keep my belly still, and for each full hour lesson I gave I got a crisp ten dollar bill. She was married for seven years to a concrete castle king. She said she wanted to learn to play the guitar and to hear her children sing. So I'd show up about once a week in my faded tight-legged jeans with a backlog full of hobo stories and dilapidated dreams. She said, "I wanna learn a love song full of happy things." She said, "I wanna learn a love song; won't you let me hear you sing?" She said, "I wanna learn a love song, I wanna hear you play." She said, "I wanna learn a love song before you go away." So I tried to teach her a couple of chords and an easy melody; but it always turned out she'd rather listen to my guitar and me. I could hear her old man laughing in the den, playing stud poker with the boys while I sang so soft in the living room, to scared to make much noise. I came one week and the den was dark and she met me at the door. And we sat on the couch and we sang and talked till I could not sing no more. The silence kept on building, her eyes grew much too wide; and I could her both of our heartbeats, but there was no place to hide. She said, "I wanna learn a love song full of happy things." She said, "I wanna learn a love song; won't you let me hear you sing?" She said, "I wanna learn a love song, I wanna hear you play." She said, "I wanna learn a love song before you go away." Well, I guess you know what happened, God, I never been so clean. Yes, I feel like I'm working in a Hollywood movie or living out a good bad dream. And all them pinup girls in that tinsel world never touched me like she can; it took another man's wife in the real world life to make this boy a man. She said, "I wanna learn a love song full of happy things." She said, "I wanna learn a love song; won't you let me hear you sing?" She said, "I wanna learn a love song, I wanna hear you play." She said, "I wanna learn a love song before you go away." I guess you know I stayed.

katie_sane
Layla by Derek & The Dominos: What'll you do when you get lonely And nobody's waiting by your side? You've been running and hiding much too long. You know it's just your foolish pride. Layla, you've got me on my knees. Layla, I'm begging, darling please. Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind. I tried to give you consolation When your old man had let you down. Like a fool, I fell in love with you, Turned my whole world upside down. Layla, you've got me on my knees. Layla, I'm begging, darling please. Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind. Let's make the best of the situation Before I finally go insane. Please don't say we'll never find a way And tell me all my love's in vain.
_Laurie_
Me And Bobby McGee ~ Janis Joplin Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waiting for a train And I's feeling near as faded as my jeans. Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained, It rode us all the way to New Orleans. I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna, I was playing soft while Bobby sang the blues. Windshield wipers slapping time, I was holding Bobby's hand in mine, We sang every song that driver knew. Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose, Nothing don't mean nothing honey if it ain't free, now now. And feeling good was easy, lord, when he sang the blues, You know feeling good was good enough for me, Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee. From the Kentucky coal mines to the California sun, Hey, Bobby shared the secrets of my soul. Through all kinds of weather, through everything that we done, Hey Bobby baby kept me from the cold. One day up near Salinas, lord, I let him slip away, He's looking for that home and I hope he finds it, But I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday To be holding Bobby's body next to mine. Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose, Nothing, that's all that Bobby left me, yeah, But feeling good was easy, lord, when he sang the blues, Hey, feeling good was good enough for me, hmm hmm, Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee. La la la, la la la la, la la la, la la la la La la la la la Bobby McGee. La la la la la, la la la la la La la la la la, Bobby McGee, la. La la la, la la la la la la, La la la la la la la la la, hey now Bobby now Bobby McGee yeah. Na na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na na na na na Hey now Bobby now, Bobby McGee, yeah. Lord, I'm calling my lover, calling my man, I said I'm calling my lover just the best I can, C'mon, where is Bobby now, where is Bobby McGee, yeah, Lordy lordy lordy lordy lordy lordy lordy lord Hey, hey, hey, Bobby McGee, lord Yeah whew Lordy lordy lordy lordy lordy lordy lordy lord Hey, hey, hey, Bobby McGee.
