Ombre Vivante
Yeah, but a lot of the criticism I see is in regards to the overt display of "bling-bling" in their music, videos, and stage performances. The thing is, I also see the same in Rock bands (take Elton John, for example). So, what's the deal?
Kevin
And again I'm not really speaking about the visual aspect of their performances , but lyrically - though with certainty , the visual is to reinforce the message . Hardly blues , in the way I think of it , anyway ...

Kevin
Not at all . How did we find ourselves on seperate highways ? I'm simply saying that I do not find a blues message , if you will , in modern hip hop . If anything , it strikes me as being a glorification of the rewards earned ( or hoped for ) by the artists who put it out . There is little about lost love , cheatin' , depression , jail , wasted lives , etc. that usually make a blues song - or more importantly the rythym or feeling of such . I don't get your point with the videos , except that they exhibit chicks , booze , luxury etc. , but are not hip hop songs showing an inclination toward being blues songs . If you are trying to prove that rock acts use similar imagery , then so be it , but , no , these are hardly blues songs either .

My point is that bands and artists in Rock, who state Blues is part of their inspiration, do the exact same thing.
Kevin
Well , I would also state that alot of bands ( especially those starting out ) make disingenious claims as to who their influences are ( in other words , lie ) in hopes that those perceived influences for potential fans and critics will help to move them along . Name dropping is nothing new in the pursuit of success . I would even gamble that , if some honesty came out , when asked ' who were your influences ? ' the answer would be the last bunch/ singer who made a fortune , period .
Batman
I know I've already used this example in this thread, but if this song isn't modern day blues, I don't know what is: Immortal Technique - Dance With the Devil Most rap is not about bling bling and the good life, that's just what you see on TV. The majority of rap is underground, and it comes mostly from people in really tough situations, i.e. the ghettos.
Batman
hmmm, that link doesn't work, apparently. Try this one: http://lyrics.astraweb.com/display/168/immortal_technique..revolutionary_vol_1..dance_with_the_devil.html

TheTallOne
I read the lyrics for that song and immediatly downloaded it. It is one of the most amazing songs that I have ever heard, and one of the most haunting. This is one song that you owe it to yourself to listen to, and maybe it will explain some of the crappy music out there today, and why the world is the way it is.
