TheLizard
Disco died because there were too many specific dance moves, and if you didn't know them, you were left out. There are no specific dances in rap, so it's not going to die. I don't like very much of it, but it's not going away. Plus, rap is better than disco. Batman
What people don't realize is that rap is not even a genre. Hip hop is.
Kevin
Kevin, you are a fool. That's all I'll say for now, but if you would like an argument, we can have one (as long as it's not too mean!) That goes without saying . I'll have to decline your kind offer though , as I don't know squat about rap , other than it sucks and fills the airwaves with noise pollution - but , hell , it's your time to be young and have fun , so knock yourself out . Mean ? Moi ?
Shawna
wow, Kev... I voice my opinion and get whippped with the cat-o'-nines, you voice yours and you're laughed with and given invitations to party. Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, I'm going out and eat worms. Levis
I may not like it that much, but I appreciate it greatly because I realise that there is a great deal of talent involved in being able to rap.

Kevin
Batman , it was simply an offhand , subjective ( yet honest ) , partly tongue-in-cheek opinion based on limited exposure to that music , and I'm sure most people saw/ will see it as being such and hold in the proper regard ; meaning unseriously or to ignore it completely . Certainly it's a treat to read informed comments or explanations here and learn something new , but I think there's room for posts of a less-than-informative or knowledgable nature too - Lord knows we have plenty already , and they can be part of the fun as well , don't you think ? Batman
Alright, I guess so. But I still disagree that hip hop will go the way of disco...it seems like it's here to stay.
Kevin
You're likely right - it's a major industry and cultural influence these days and with the money at stake , few labels are going to want to let it disappear anytime soon . It was just some wishful thinking on my part ...

Ombre Vivante
Disco never died. Jean-Marc Cerrone made a 30-year career out of it
Kevin
Are you the one keeping it going , then , edna ? To BA : Who ? It may not be technically dead , then , but certainly on major life support . Edited October 14, 2006 by Guest It's Alive ! IT'S ALIVE !

Ombre Vivante
He's old now and took a bit of a hiatus in the mid-80s, but he kept making bona fide Disco music the whole time and is still revered as a major figure in the scene. I think only Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers (and maaaaybe Bobby O) rank higher in name recognition. http://www.cerrone.net/disco.html
edna
There´s very good Disco Music (Moroder sound, Philly sound, Motown, just to quote a few... ) and no need to dress like a Disco icon to like it (and dance to it). I wonder if, in twenty years, hip-hop will have left its mark as deep as Disco did.
Ombre Vivante
I think we're already near the 20-year mark for Hip-Hop and it's one of the popular forms of music as we speak. Disco itself never died, it only changed its image a bit. You think The Pet Shop Boys don't list Disco as a major influence in their music, or the whole Italian Pop industry of the 80s, or Latin Freestyle? The music we refer to as "Dance" nowadays is just Disco dressed differently.

Kevin
Fair enough , edna/BA . I guess I'm offering ( as I only can ) a layman's point of view that disco , as we once knew it in it's obvious and popular form , is all but gone . Ombre Vivante
Well, in all fairness, Disco in the form of a buncha has-beens and trend hacks (i.e. KISS, Rod Stewart, The Stones, Blondie, et al.) did deserve to die. You can only have so many bands following a trend before it becomes the butt of jokes and the lightning rod of pop culture.
Batman
I see a lot of hip hop as modern day blues. I just realized that I use the term "modern day blues" to describe a lot of non-blues music.
Kevin
It's difficult to see it as 'real ' blues when themes ( videos ) often revolve around ' the good life ' of chicks , cash , cars , and downing yet another bottle of Cristal . Perhaps you're right , though . These material things may be really getting them down .
Ombre Vivante
It works for Blues-inspired bands (i.e. the life of drugs, women, and rock 'n roll).
Kevin
I don't mean those themes , in particular , but the more positive spin of circumstances that the artist portrays himself as being in - unlike most blues songs , wouldn't you say ?
