Farin
I always wondered that. What's the deal with band names like Motörhead, Mötley Crüe or Blue Öyster Cult? Why do/did they put a 'ö' or 'ü' in it? They don't get pronounced, do they?
blind-fitter
They du in Husker Du. (Sorry. Umlaut-free keyboard) Edited June 8, 2006 by Guest The most trivial of amendments:you wouldn't believe...
daslied
Because they think they're being funny. I'm pretty sure that none of those people actually know what an umlaut is. Maybe Lemmy; he actually has a set of moles on his face that look like one.

Farin
And who put the 'Ram' in Ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong? But seriously, there is no actual reason for it (Besides a running gag)? It just gets a bit confusing sometimes, because I always want to pronounce the umlaut. (I heard that the german crowd at a Mötley Crüe concert actually did...) Thanks guys
c_s_1987
I think if you pronounced Motörhead with the umlaut, it would still sound the same. Obviously the same can't be said for the other two. I don't know why they do it. Maybe it's a joke regarding how Led Zeppelin docked the 'a' so people would pronounce their name right, so now these bands are making people pronounce their names wrong instead. Actually, forget what I just said, see this link instead. Note the part about Spinal Tap. I thought maybe they should have been more creative and called themselves Å Ïïňäĺ Å¤Ã¤Ï or something like that. MindCrime
Why the heck would Motorhead want to look "goth"? Because he's Lemmy & hardcore in every aspect known to man. Queensrÿche does this umalt thing as well, I think it's from the Scandanavian-Cyrillic alphabet & meant to be pronounced a certain way.
