Flairbird65 Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Although some of their music was influenced by early blues musicians, I don't think that Led Zeppelin actually did any covers. I may be wrong, i just cant think of any. Bring It On Home is an old Sonny Boy Williamson song. And When The Levee Breaks is not an original. It was written in the 40's or 50's by Memphis Minnie.
Joel17592 Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Just off the top of my head: Led Zeppelin covers - You Shook Me, I Can't Quit You Baby, Traveling Riverside Blues. Plus they had a nasty habit of taking writing credit for songs they didn't write. They were forced to give Willie Dixon co-writing credit for Whole Lotta Love. The Who covered two Stones songs The Last Time and Under My Thumb, plus Motoring, Young Man Blues. There are also a few more covers on the Odds and Sods album.
ImThatGuyToo Posted September 24, 2004 Report Posted September 24, 2004 Covers Project is a superb site for looking up covers and original artists, and quite a few songs that you might think were originals are actually covers. Led Zeppelin covered a LOT of songs, in the blues tradtion. Notably Stairway to Heaven's acoustic intro is actually borrowed from a song called Taurus by Spirit. Some quick Led Zeppelin covers: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You Dazed and Confused The Lemon Song Gallow's Pole In My Time of Dying My guess as to a band who never covered would be Steve Miller Band. Alas, I just checked on coversproject and apparantly they have covered a bunch of songs as well.
Endymion Posted September 24, 2004 Report Posted September 24, 2004 I thought that Frank Zappa hasn't done any covers, but apparently it ain't so according to this site...
Danielj Posted September 24, 2004 Report Posted September 24, 2004 I think I have heard versions of Knockin' On Heaven's Door and Stairway to Heaven by Pink Floyd
edna Posted September 24, 2004 Report Posted September 24, 2004 The Cars... They did only five albums and I don´t remember any cover. The Who covered "Summertime Blues" (Eddie Cochran´s? I´m not sure who´s the author).
MindCrime Posted September 24, 2004 Report Posted September 24, 2004 Many of the aforementioned artists have indeed covered songs, just check out this site Top 100 Greatest Cover Songs Edna good call on The Cars, Ric Ocasek wrote most of the songs, except for a few co-written by Greg Hawkes. Michael Stone wrote The Little Black Egg though.
CaptainMikeRS Posted September 24, 2004 Report Posted September 24, 2004 Opiate - The Eagles .. good call! I don't recall any cover there. Ant - Rush did NOT cover .... however, Feedback ! due out on 6/29/04 is 9 covers recorded and they no longer qualify! Rush's first song was a cover of Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away on a single, they never really counted. I think Seven Bridges Road is a cover by the Eagles.
edna Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 . Michael Stone wrote The Little Black Egg though. Mindcrime, in what album is "Little Black Egg"? I´m moving from my house to another, I´ve got all my vinyls in cases and I don´t remember that song. Thanks!
MindCrime Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 edna, it was on their '95 set "Just What I Needed: The Car's Anthology", the song was originally done by the Rattlers in 1985 & then the Nightcrawlers in '87.
lotsahits Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 The Who also covered Shakin' All Over on Live At Leeds, originally by Chad Allen Group in Canada (the Guess Who). And the Eagles did do covers including Seven Bridges Road and Please Come Home For Christmas.
edna Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 edna, it was on their '95 set "Just What I Needed: The Car's Anthology", the song was originally done by the Rattlers in 1985 & then the Nightcrawlers in '87. Thank you! That´s the one I don´t have... I ´ll try to get it.
MindCrime Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 Hey, no problem Edna, being an anthology, I'm sure it only has a couple of unreleased songs & the rest are commercial hits from their previous albums.
XXX Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 Midge Ure did a couple of covers, but I don't think Ultravox covered a song in their brief stint in the early 80s.
windy1 Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 I think someone here was correct with Boston, and I don't think Journey did any covers. I know one for sure - Captain Beefheart, and I believe Supertramp was all original material.
MindCrime Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 Windy is right about Supertramp, in fact "Rosie Had Everything Planned" is the only song that Rick Davies didn't co-write.
edna Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 And the Eagles did do covers including Seven Bridges Road and Please Come Home For Christmas. I just found they also covered Tom Waits´ "Ol´55".
