SoulGirl
so many greats have been mentioned. i love ella fitzgerald, nina simone, joni mitchell, fiona apple, stevie nicks, joan baez.... many more that have been mentioned. alanis morrissette's first album was amazing mainly because of the way she used her voice. one of my new favourites is kt tunstal - i love her album! daslied
I have to add, even though her output is scant, Lisa Hannigan. She's the female vocal on all of Damien Rice's stuff. If I could marry an intangible, it'd be the bridge of "The Blower's Daughter". Wharf.
SoulGirl
i know lisa, she's a lovely girl, gorgeous voice although i much prefer her high register to her lower. the first time i saw damo play i cried the whole way through! her contributions to his songs are just perfect. i hate the new single though - he seems to have lost his touch! daslied
I love her entire range...maybe it's the accent? Agreed that the new song (Unplayed Piano) kind of sucks, but from what I've read it was just a quick throwaway for charity. Maybe he'll actually do another album in the next 5 years... SoulGirl
well he's a bit of a procrastinator - i was at three 'album launches' for o which ended up just being gigs because they hadn't decided on an album cover. he actually recorded two albums at the same time - o with all the soft songs and another album with all the heavier songs but he's obviously not going to release it at this stage - probably sick of playing the songs by now! Earth-Angel
Gis, hobnobbing with the famous folks You know who has a very unusual vocal style, an artist I recently discovered, called Joanna Newsom. Unusual style, range, very odd all in all! Interesting and quirky lyrics though.
nobody_home
has he had a sex change operation? I've heard castration does things to your voice... either that, or they keep a tank of helium backstage at every show.
invisible_r
castration does indeed do things to your voice, which is why a great percentage of opera singers used to be castrati. they got castrated as small boys to prevent the voice from breaking. castrati

Steel2Velvet
I always liked Dusty Springfield's voice...love the song Son Of A Preacher Man Dusty is one of my alltime favorites, Laurie!!! And I am sure most female singing artists would acknowledge her talents. She was equally at home with blues, rock or ballads. Her "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" still gives me goosebumps. Mama Cass Elliot had a great fluid voice and she knew how to control it. Her version of "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" is a seminar on how to interpret a song. Tina Turner has the rare ability to intonate understandably and soulfully during uptempo pieces. She can rock as well as anyone who has ever held a microphone! I really like the voices of Carole King and Marilyn McCoo as well.
_Laurie_
Yes Mama Cass had an awesome voice that blended so well with the others in the group...Mama's and Papa's had some great talent that's for sure, and beautiful harmony to add to it. Otokichi
A side benefit of hanging out with "The Greatest Generation" is to encounter overlooked/forgotten musicians/singers. One great female stylist of the past was known as an outstanding singer before she landed in Hollywood. Check out the recordings of Deanna Durbin and you may be in for a surprize. Speaking of "the girl behind the curtain," Marni Nixon made some of the brightest lights in Hollywood sing on film, even if they couldn't do so in real life. Also, I'm not too sure of this, but I've read that Jean Hagen also did "behind the curtain" duty for other photogenic-but-mute actors. If so, her "I cahnt sing" role in "Singin' In The Rain" is ironic, to say the least.

_Laurie_
I saw Melissa on a music special awhile back, she did a Janis Joplin song with this 17 yr old girl, Joss Stone...It was a pretty good performance, and that Joss Stone has quite the voice for being so young. I haven't heard much about her lately.
SoulGirl
oh i don't like joss stone at all! i agree, she has a mature voice for her age but i don't like it at all and i think she sounds flat most of the time. but i do love carole king's and dusty springfield's voices! katie_sane
Agree with you about Joss Stone there Gis.
Earth-Angel
I don't like Joss' voice much either, but I have voiced my opinions on her before. She's a darling, sweet and adorable girl, but I don't like her voice 90% of the time. It sounds very "put on". I'd like to hear her sing naturally. Another vocal stylist everyone but myself has been raving about is Katie Melua. I know Gis didn't like her before either. I just don't see how she stands out above any other singer on the airwaves today. She sings nicely, she writes her own songs and good for her. But she is nowhere near worthy of all the hype surrounding her! I'd like to hear much more of vocalists like Heather Nova and Sarah McLachlin. I don't think Nova really even sings anymore, but her voice is outstanding!
invisible_r
i really like joss stone's voice, it is very powerful, i guess it doesn't suit her looks though. i avoid katie melua because that song, "closest thing to crazy" or whatever really annoys me, probably because of the tv ads.
