MarcM Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Have any of our friends in the UK been to any of these places, or perhaps even live in one? http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=152816&command=displayContent&sourceNode=152546&contentPK=13088344
Earth-Angel Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Staines is not too far from me, about 20 minutes drive. In the same county though. Passed through an interesting town called Cocking a few months ago.
Ken Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I think the Aussies have it beat.... I wonder what the church gatherings are like.. Ken.
DiggsUK Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I went up the A1 past Wetwang and close to Cockermouth recently. You know, many of these names were given when the districts were of 'dubious' repute, and were a direct reflection of what actually went on - saved on directions I suppose. This doesn't explain why there is a hamlet called 'Dog Bottom' near us though, or the reason for calling an East Anglian village close to where I once lived as Pulham St.Mary. Regards
Medwed Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 i thing my favourites are "upper dicker" and "bitchfield" *laughs* thanks for this thread!

Sarah_Star Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 I came into work this morning feeling sorry for myself and have a ever so slight whiff of a hangover, then I saw this thread. Have never giggled so much so early on a friday morning at work! I want to live here: 43 Honey Knob Hill, Wiltshire or, 37 Happy Bottom, Dorset Thankyou so much for that list!! I shall hopefully raise a smile with my colleagues now! x
Earth-Angel Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 Hey Sarah, glad to see we got a giggle out of someone feeling a little low About 20 minutes from where I live is a town called Dorking. I'm going to check out the rentals for jr to move there
Sarah_Star Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 To be fair the only reason why I was a little low is due to my 'ever so slight hangover'....because I just LOVE work and instantly get a high just from being here. (Obviously, I mean why else would I be on here when I have sooooo much to do?!) But thanks for the pick-me-up!! :happybanana:
invisible_r Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 there are alot of stupid placenames in london , or at least i think they are stupid (but not rude), like elephant and castle, shepherd's bush (ok that is a bit rude), barking.
Sarah_Star Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 oh, and Cockfosters, which Ive always thought is slightly strange!! I live near a village called Towcester, pronounced Toaster, which I never realised was odd until I went to uni and my new friends pointed it out to me! I guess you just tend to accept these things growing up and not notice!
invisible_r Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 oh yeah, how could i forget? damon albarn is from cockfosters if i'm not mistaken anyway i love looking at the map and find all these names funny and stupid but my boyfriend thinks i'm weird
